3.0 5spd gear oil

I picked up 11 quarts of pennzoil 80w90 GL5 gear oil today and I have a few questions... is just a GL5 rating ok to use in an 89's transmission, transfer case, and rear differential? The carquest brand I normally use to top everything off (the transmission and rear differential leaks a little) is GL3, GL4 and GL5 rated...

says on the back of the pennzoil bottle: "meets or exceeds the performance requirements of API GL-5 and MT-1 specifications and is suitable for use in high performance differentials including racing and sports cars" doesn't say anything about use in transmission or transfer case like the carquest brand does but I assume it's about the same as the carquest brand..

my last question: Does anyone know the capacity of the 5spd transmission and the transfer case?

i think you want GL4 oil. i've heard using GL5 in the transmission makes the synchros act funny, since it's so slippery.

hmm, never would've thought of that. It actually does say it's for manual transmissions on the back, I just missed it before :pat: BUT only when GL-5 is specified... I'm getting tired of missing the origonal manual for my truck

another thing I just noticed on the bottom: "contains petroleum lubricant. repeated skin contact can cause skin disorders" a pair of those yellow kitchen gloves will go a long way haha

well I just put it in my rear differential today, it took a little over three quarts. The magnet on the drain plug had almost a half inch of metal shavings on it, pretty nasty.

I know some people on here have changed the gear oil on their 3.0 with the 5spd and 4 wheel drive, right? if any of you read this I'd appreciate if you could tell me how much it holds, as I'm not sure I have enough for the transmission and transfer case.

Thanks,
later

I can check for you later, I don't have my manual on me. If I recall, the rear end was 3 qts (like you said) the front diff was 2, and the trans was 4? I'll make sure and let you know.

hmm, if the front's just two I might be able to do that after the transmission and transfer case tomorrow. I took the fill plug off the front to make sure it still had enough oil in it and it starting coming out, so it has enough in and what came out was a little brown but not black like my rear diff. sure wouldn't hurt to change it anyway though.

I appreciate you checking, if the transmission takes 4 then I'm guessing the transfer case would be less?

later fellas

On my 93 3.0 4WD 5speed the capacities are as follows:
Transmission --> 3.2 quarts
Transfer case --> 1.2 quarts
Front Diff --> w/ADD 2.0 quarts
Rear Diff --> 2.3 quarts

Hope this helps

as for oil grades, you'll definitely want gl5 in both diffs, gl4 or gl5 in the transfer case(it's not picky, no synchros), and gl4 or mt90 or mtl in the transmission.

that's for a manual transmission, for autos i believe atf goes in the tranny and t-case?

Exclamation

What you want for the manual transmission is Red Line MT-90. Absolutely wonderful stuff. The previous owner of my Toy had put Mobil 1 75W90 GL5 in the tranny and I was getting some minor gear/synchro clash between lower gears and on downshifts. With the MT-90 in the box that all went completely away and the tranny just plain shifts like I just rebuilt it yesterday. Truely great stuff.

This is what my manual states as well;

Transmission ---> 3.2 quarts, Multipurpose API GL-4 or 5, SAE 75W-90
Transfer case --> w/ADD 1.2 quarts, Multipurpose API GL-4 or 5, SAE 75W-90
----------------> w/out ADD 1.7 quarts, (same as above)
Front Diff ------> w/ADD 2.0 quarts, ADD Hypoid Gear Oil or Hypoid G/O API GL-5, SAE 75W-90
----------------> w/out ADD 1.7 quarts, Hypoid G/O API GL-5, SAE 80W, 80W-90, or 90W depending on climate
Rear Diff -------> 2.3 quarts, (same as above)

Faded, thanks for takin the time to put all that info down. I'm almost sure I have 4.10 gears, the numbers on the drivers door jam say so at least according to the info I got off this site... if that's the case (i'd much rather have 4.56 gears) then I guess that's why my rear diff. took around 3.2 quarts.

as for the redline mt90, I'd love to put something like that in but with the transmission leaking around 1/3rd of a quart in 3 to 4 months, that'd get way too expensive. I bought the seal and that red glue to fix it, but haven't gotten around to it.

it's raining today but I think I'll just pull it in the garage and get it done

thanks again everyone for your help

ok, changed it all.

Here's the weird thing, both differentials and the transfer case have magnetic drain plugs.. but the transmission doesn't?! Do you guys have magnetic drain plugs on your transmission? I'm thinking maybe mine got changed out at some point before I bought it.

or maybe there's a reason the transmission doesn't have a magnetic drain plug?

I'm going to help my neighbor change his in a few months, but I'd like to find out before that if it origonally had a magnetic drain plug or if it'd hurt to buy one to put in there?
