3.0 to 3.4

I know I know search,I have done that but am getting a little confused on all the stuff out there.I have a 91 runner with a 3.0 and an auto.It recently developed a knock and the tranny is leaking all of a sudden.I want to do the 3.4 swap but need some info.Which year/truck should it be out of?Will the tranny from the 3.4 mount up?If I buy the harness too will I have to custom wire anything?Basicly I would like to do this as quick and easily as possible and will be doing the work myself.

You should PM or EM 82trekker or 92' 4Runner SR5 as they are doing this exact swap and should be able to fill you in on everything that you'll need and can expect.

Yes and no.

Unless you do all (most) of the work yourself you can save yourself lots of money. I am currently in the middle of the same swap. My 3.4 came from a 98 4Runner 4x4 MT. I have no idea what transmissions are costing used but I bought my 3.4 for $1800 shipping w/ 38K miles. If you want I can supply you with a number and name of the fella I delt with because he was fairly knowledgable concerning the swap.

The main cost from ORS is for the harness. Sure it same TONS of time and headache but for the price I have decided to do the wiring myself. Visit http://techinfo.toyota.com to download the factory service manual (for ANY toyota vehicle). At $10 a day it is worth it.

I was comparing doing a 3.4L swap versus a 4.3L swap in anticipation of my winter project. I found the 4.3L swap to be much more reasonable for both overall price and parts. In both cases, you will need some sort of lift.

3.4 Toyota Swap
--Used low mileage 3.4L engine/tranny/harness $3700 average
--Offroad Solutions Full Kit $2195

Total = $5900 w/your own labor.

Chevy 4.3 Swap
--Used low milage 92-94 4.3 CPI Vortec Motor $850 (195HP/260TQ)
--Howell Wiring Harness $350
--4.3 Transmission Adapater $450
--4.3 Motor Mounts $153
--GM Power Steering pump and custom PS lines $200
--Misc hoses, exhaust, other stuff needed $1000

Total = $3003 w/your own labor.

With the difference in prices you could easily get headers, cams, flat top pistons, valves, lifters and a nice ignition and still be way under the 3.4L swap price.

These numbers seem way high to me (esp for engine/tranny/harness combo).
You also don't need the OS full kit either to do the swap.

I guess it depends where you live for pricing and availability. I was taking the 3.4L Auto tranny pricing from Offroad Soltions, as they seem to know their stuff:

You might not need the full kit, but it sure makes life alot easier. I'd rather pay more up front and have all the stuff then have to make x number of trips to the store to find things

It seems a bit much for the 3.4 swap.I could sell the truck for 2500 and put that with the 5000 for the swap and buy a 3rd gen runner.I have decisions to make.I will have my 87 runner running tomorrow and I just bought an 88 k5 blazer with a 6 inch lift and 33's and now the 91 is knocking so I may let it sit for awhile.Thanks for the info guys.
