basically we want to put a kit together that takes the guesswork out of the swap, and makes it a long weekend project, instead of a 2 week struggle. Some significant mechanical knowledge and tools will obviously still be necesary for such an undertaking.

I would if I had the funding but not many companies sponsor low income 4Runner owners that own a 1991 with over 200,000 miles on it. The truth is if I had the dough I would so until then I will drive it til it blows up. I think it will make it to 250,000 at the rate im driving it. Has anyone ever heard of someone modding a newer Supra engine to fit? I think someone put an older style Supra in recently but im talking mid nineties. Power! I also want a 5 speed manual, screw this automatic drama.

You make it so I can stick one in my 1st gen, and you got a deal. What would be the difference between the 1st and 2nd gens. Aren't the engines (3.0) the same?

would it be that much more difficult to add this 2JZ-ge engine to the 3rd gen? right now, i don't have the cash, but if it's gonna be around the $3K area i may be able to go in on this one. For me, it's a matter of what's more practical. Taking my present (messed up) engine into a shop, and having it bored out, and fixed, or swapping a JZ in. It may also come to which option is cheaper. However if you think the 2JZ will give me more power than my present 5vzfe

yea that article is one we are looking at to get a general idea, but like i said before youd want to go with the newer engine to comply with regulations. right now we're shooting for a sub 3k total price much depending on how much you can find an engine for. mileage is a big factor there, if 80-90k doesnt bother you the engine shouldnt run more than a grand, if you want one with say 20,000 miles you are gonna pay more but i would LOVE to have a practically new engine in my nearly decade old truck
as far as mating the kit to a 3rd gen, i dont THINK it will be that hard, i just dont wanna go around saying it will work perfect right away. A with any mod, where theres a will. . . theres a way. when we start workin on it ill def take lots of measurements to easily determine the practicality for other models.
i can relate to the engine work debate, i dumped 2 grand in my engine two years ago at the stealership just to fix some seemingly minor bugs, damn i hate that place. . .

How many vehicles came with this engine? I think it is in Supras and some Lexus's. I'm just wondering about how many will be available at wrecker yards. I think its a great idea BTW.

It's much much easier to put the older 7MGE in your generation 4Runner. They also cost around $600 for the engine, the 2JZ is like 2k due to the fact that supra guys like swapping them in, too.
If you have a 22R or 22RE the mounts will bolt up if you use 5MGE mounts. The transmission will also bolt up using the supra bellhousing if you have a 5spd. They are good for 190hp and 170 tq I believe. Definitely a car engine, but still a step above the 3.0 and possibly even the 3.4. Easier to swap, much cheaper, plus it's an I-6, one of the few naturally balanced engines. They are smooth like butter...

yea for the 1st gen guys the older engine would be preferred since we already KNOW it bolts up to the bellhousing. im still researching the 2jz engine as far as that respect. . . hopefully toyota was nice and made everything somewhat easy for us

Just letting everyone know we're making progress but we still have a long road ahead before we can be sure this engine will fit & work with the 2nd Gens w/out other outrageous modifications.

Thanks Corey. Maybe with a lil Sticky-fication, this thread will get some more views. We need all the votes we can get from 2nd Gen guys to determine whether this swap kit is worth the trouble of research/tests.

NCSU & I are about halfway to the testing phase as far as funding is concerned. We figure it will cost us quite a chunk of change to do our initial test-swap. Donations will be happily accepted if anyone wants to help us get this moving earlier.
