Im replacing my rear coil springs (keeping it stock size) for the 92 4runner, and would like to know the difference between the heavy duty and variable rate springs..any thoughts or suggestions?

 

id recommend the downey HD springs, they ride great and never wear out like the stock springs. the ride was never harsh or stiff, get some good shocks too, you'll never regret it. Heres some pics of various springs side by side. Stock -> downey HD -> OME 860. I've never driven a progressive rate spring before, so i cant make reasonable judgements about them.

 

Holy crap those OME 860 springs are huge compaired to the downeys!
The 860's are from a cruiser right?

 

yes, OME 860's are rated at a 2.5 in lift for an FJ-80 lancruiser, they yield about a 5 in lift on a 4runner

 

Are you running those OME 860's with your 35"s?

 

yes, they easily clear 35s, i also have a 2in body lift but its not for tire clearance. i use the body lift to accomidate my drivetrain lift and accomidate my new gas tank under the rear of the truck. I should have nearly a flat belly when its all done

those downey HDs are sitting in my garage, for sale if you want em, you'd probably want some spacers too to level out the 4in IFS lift front

 

Or you could go with the OME 860's and 1.5" BJ spacers in the front.

EDIT: Do the OME 860 coils have a long side and a short side like the stock cruiser coils?

yes they have a short side and a long side, but yes you have a stock gas tank on one side so its not a problem, the taller spring goes there.

 

So in the end it sits level with the tall side on the gas tank side?

i cant say it would be 100% level but should be pretty darn close, not enough that you could ever tell by looking at it

 

I guess you could use OME trim packers to level it out right?

 

if it bothered you that much it wouldnt be hard to shim it with a thin spacer, i'm not familiar with the OME ones you speak of but i've never looked around for them

 

Hey NCSU, when you put the OME860's in did you by any chance also get the longer adjustable upper rear control arms? If not have you had any problems?
