There must be some changes from 89->93 then. My VSS sensor went a year ago so I replaced it, but I never noticed my tranny acting up and my speedo was fine.

Don't forget the speedo itself. Have had several cable-driven speedos dry up inside over the years, producing a god-awful squeal -- even with a properly lubed cable. Fix is relatively easy. You can fabricate a speedo-lubing device out of a short (~2-3") piece of soft rubber hose (size of the hose to fit snug over the cable fitting on the back of the speedo). Plug one end of the hose, put a small amount of light oil inside, slip the open end over the speedo cable "bayonnet," tip it so the speedo is down, and squeeze the hose a few times.

Got everything back together today. Put in a new speedo cable and replaced the seal & O-ring on the speedo gearbox. On the test drive, the speedo no longer fluctuated at all. It'll sit out tonight and I'll check it again while cool tomorrow (low tonight is only in 40's).

Let me tell you though, replacing it was a PIA. The gearbox seals are easy.

I replaced mine last summer and it didn't have any oil in it. Seems like everyone has problems with thoes once they hit about 10 years old. Mine squeeled like crazy. I thought it was a fan belt for 6 months!

Trust me guys, the major reason our cables are squealing is because the speedo gearbox seal is hard and bad. It allowed gearbox oil to travel up the speedo cable as it was spinning. Working good now? I may dig into mine now if that was the fix for you. Ben

The hard part about this job is getting the gauge cluster out. Helps if you have small arms to reach in behind. Other than that it is really strieght forward. I did mine in less than an hour.

Yep. The speedo works flawlessly now. No bouncing, cold weather screeching or leaks at the transfer case. But trust me, the speedo cable was a chore. Be prepared to spend a day or two on it, because you may need some down time.

That's the difference between a 22RE and a 3VZE. The 3.0 is hard to get at to get the old one out. I spent more time getting the old one out than getting the new one in. And the emergency brake cable gave me fits. Finally I broke the little tab off that actuates the emergency brake light switch. Then I drilled the old tab out, tapped the hole and put a socket head bolt in its place. It works fine now and it'll be easier to remove the emergency brake cable if I have to do this again at 546,000 miles.

Guess what guys, the noise is back. In fact it stays on longer than it used to on cool mornings (in 30's). The speedometer doesn't waver like it used to. But I noticed my cruise isn't working now. Gotta diagnose that now too. I may rip into the dash, pull the cluster and try Whizzkidder's trick for lubing the speedo itself.
