15 months ago I replaced the entire front brake setup on my runner (lines, pads, calipers, rotors). I went in yesterday (same company different store) with a low speed brake squeel (figured some sand got up in there). They did a brake inspection and told me I needed new front pads w/ the spring assembly (as it had broken) and of course their warranty was up 3 months ago. With a fluid flush, they quoted me $325.
I looked around a bit and didn't find anything about replacing the spring assembly online. How tough would it be to throw them in in my driveway, and anyone know if the hardware is available seperately?

I have no idea what kind of gear you have, but a rebuild kit for an OEM caliper is $35/caliper. I don't think you can just buy the spring separate, you'll have to buy the rebuild kit. Nothing to doing it either and it makes it a brand new caliper w/ some new paint. Any FSM Chiltons/Haynes will show you how to do it, or you take off the old one and swap parts...not hard at all.

 

having done my front brake pads about 3 wks ago, you remove the retaining spring, spring clip, tap out the two pins, slide out the old pads, press the pistons back into the caliper, then reverse the process. should be no need to bleed as you did not remove the lines. as waskilly said, chiltons or haynes will have all the info if you want to rebuild.

the spring asseblby is basically a bent up piece of coathanger....

def not worth $325 to do it.... the hardware from toyota even should cost no mroe than $20

 

Thanks for the quick responses guys, 325 sounded more then a little steep. I'll get em ordered and throw em in this weekend.
