Well I am just beginning to modify my 22re (let it breathe) and i noticed the fan is really loud and seems to me like its a lot of drag on the motor. My question is has anyone tried replacing the stocker with and elec. Did you notice a difference? Should I try this??

well its putting one on a 3.0 but, theres really no difference. So here go's go to auto zone and get you an electric fan rated for a 2.2, mine for my 3.0 was about $70. Also get some extra wire, 40 amp relay, and a adjustable thermostat (should be right by the fans on the shelf). The only thing i did different was i did not run my hot wire to an ignition wire, I went straight to the battery, that way when you shut off the truck the fan will run to cool it down, just like most of your import cars. wont have that done, but thats going on before tires or lift. Question, is it hard to change the ADD to manual hubs on a 1st gen, and if i have manual hubs and a autolocker front diff it shouldn't effect driving when its unlocked right?

 

dont put one in the front unless you plan on doing very hard core off-roading, and no you can find manual hubs on ebay every day

 

So why do people say not to lock the front diff? Wouldn't you want it locked in almost every application off road?

 

The main potential problem with locking the front diff is turning. It only requires a simple understanding of geometry to see that when you turn one wheel travels in a larger arc than the other. If the front end is locked the wheels are forced to travel the same amount of distance as each other. So, one turns and the other has to drag, slide, scrub, spin or whatever is necessary to keep pace with the other.
In some situations, having the front locked up is very beneficial to completely necessary, but you have to pay the price. The price can be either simply losing a little rubber or potentially binding up the whole system and breaking parts like birfields or axles. This holds true mostly in rocky situations where you get some really good traction. If you are in sand or mud locking up the front diff isn't nearly as troublesome although it still affects the way the vehicle will handle.
As far as using an electric fan, search this site or Pirate4x4.com for the Taurus (as in Ford Taurus) fan mod. It is cheaper than a Blackmagic and from what I have come across, much more durable. Someday when I have some spare time, it is on my list. The poor little 22re was never meant to be an airplane and to try and turn what is basically a propeller to keep it cool. Opinions vary on how much horsepower you gain, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was good for at least 4 or 5.

 

Could you post a link for one of the taurus fan swap forums? Yeah 4 or 5 hp is alot on a yota with only 95 hp to begin with.

What do you guys think about this fan for electric? I think the current e-fan sucks. My engine runs really hot compared to what my other truck ran with a stock setup. It also gets to tipping point on the heat while in the city.

I want a fan I can toggle on and off. I really need to do a lot of re-wiring though, also would like direction for some good gauges. I have a oil pressure and water temp gauge. The water temp is shorted and the oil one leaks. This is all done by the previous owner.
