22RE To 22RET swap

I've got an 88 4Runner w/22RE in it...I just found out that I've got a head gasket blown....I know I don't need to replace to whole motor but I was thinking about it....Does anyone know if I can just drop in a 22RET without any other mods?

Fuel injected? (can't remember) If so you'll probably need to swap the computers but I would imagine the wiring harness would be close.

For my money - if you happy with the performance fix it. Plenty of resourses available to help you do it yourself. If you really need more power and this happens to be the right excuse - look for a newer 2.7L or 3.4 from a Taco/Runner. It'll cost more but still be easier than a none toy engine.

22ret

Mudd Runna, I mentioned on a previous post that I was thinking of trading a tranny I have for a 22ret w/tranny. The 22ret and tranny both need rebuilt. I'm not going to pursue it. If it's something you'd be interested in checking out I'll try to get the two you together. Let me know. rj

hey ya know what...

i had a 90 yoter and i wanted to change the engine from a 22re to a 22rte and the foreman said ya gots ta change everything including the wiring harness and the ECU. And for what??? only 40HP?? thats bogus in my opinion-- i would modify the internals of my 22re with some titanium con-rods, high compression heads, bigger valves, a big camshaft, knife-edged crank, aluminum flywheel, ported-polished head and a larger diameter throttle body. After all those things, youll waste pretty much any 4 cylinder 4runner out there.

...and enough money that you could have just swapped in a 4.3 V6 in there instead.

I lost ya!

I know a guy that is going to pull out his 22ret out of his 86 and replacing it w/a V8. Other than putting the two of you together I'm not involved. rj

3.4 is Toy, 4.3 is Chevy... whatever engine you use in a swap you need the same stuff, all the wiring and the computer. About the only other thing you need is any necessary adapters and some fab skills.

Yeah. I'd either go with a full swap in of a 4.3 or 3.4 or just rebuild your 22RE. JMHO but it's probably not worth swapping in a Turbo for what you get. They are kind of cool but you're probably after torque not HP if you're wheeling it.

Good luck,

Warren

THe easiest swap would be a healthy TBI 4.3. The wiring is much easier than the 3.4 or the MPI 4.3...

You know....I think that's what I'm still going to do is just beef the he** out of my 22RE....I guess whatever I can...Cam, headers, high flow exhaust and anything else I can think of....I suppose now would be a good time to do it since I'm going to have the engine apart to do my head job.....
