2003-4 4runner exhaust question

The exhaust on my 95 Landcruiser was all stainless steel and looked as good as new after 9 years of use, I'm just wondering if Toyota used stainless steel on the 4 generation 4runners exhaust?

Guys ... are you sure? I didn't think that it was stainless steel ... I know you can buy s.s. mufflers to replace the stock one ... but I thought that in stock form, none of it was stainless steel ... ?

I'll find the proof but I'm sure it is stainless in stock form.

If memory serves me, my SR5s exhaust (at least the final piece), was a flat black color from day one. Not sure about the rest, but a quick check with a magnet should answer the question about stainless or not.

Just checked mine today, and unless I'm totally confused, it's not stainless.
Magnet jumps right on it, every place I tried.

Sounds like stainless, if it was aluminized it would not be magnetic.

One of the guys in 4Runner.org apparently has some experience with Stainless and indicates that being magnetic is not necessarily a good test for stainless. Here is his reply to this issue in the other forum;

"Most stainless steels are magnetic. But some are not. No iron content, uses high nickel content instead.
I work with SS alloys all day long in the shop. I have encountered NONE that were non-magnetic. SS alloys have BETTER anti-corrosion properties than steel alloys, but again, it depends on the alloy."

"The question of magnetic properties has been an issue that has been quite misrepresented. Of the four structural types of stainless steel, only the Austenitic type is non-magnetic. This is due to the nickel content of the alloy."

For a nice description visit this website.

I was under my truck this weekend and it doesn't look like any stainless I've ever seen.
