2002 4Runner - sounds like an airplane under hood

2002 - 4Runner - 150,000 miles
I drove about 350 miles today, no issues. We parked and about an hour later hopped back in. When I started the truck it sounded like an airplane taking off under my hood. The heat and a/c were off. When I started to drive it subsided and finally died out but came back the next time I started it up. I am on the road so a bit worried about what it could be. Any ideas?

It's the cooling fan. As a matter of fact I just replaced the engine driven fan on my 98 4 Runner with an electric fan. It made a huge difference, nice and quiet now. Got a fan from a 960 Volvo that was headed for the junkyard, made some brackets to hold it . Bought a Hayden fan controller from Autozone to run the fan. Works great.

eeh i think its just that big fan getting warmed up, the higher rpms, then when the engine gets slightly warm it slows.. mine has always sounded like that, but it goes away after a minute or so

I'll beat a dead a hourse - it's normal.

My 2002 4runner always does this, it typically lasts about 40seconds then slows.

I'm suprised that this is the first time you noticed it, or that it has not done before (which would be not normal).

The vehicle has never made this noise before. When I say airplane I mean like an airplane is right in the car or you had a box fan that went to speed 10 set at a speed of 100. Tonight it got worse and is now occuring when I am driving. I am having it looked at in the am.

Heres how to test a fan clutch............

Can you open the hood and spin the fan by hand? If not, the fan clutch is locked up and needs to be replaced.
