I've searched high and low for two days, and maybe i'm looking in all the wrong spots but I can't find good instructions on how to get the dash piece removed from the center console so I can get at the head unit and remove it. All the links i've found have since died, and I really could use a good writeup with pictures right about now! Can anyone help me out?

thats not too great,but basically
on my 99 limited,

open armrest thing

pull out the plastic cupgolder thing, (to do this, set parking brake, much easier.) Pull straight up on it

unscrew the 4wd knob,( there should be a screw in the side of it somwhere) put car in like first gear pull out that piece, straight up, starting with the end closest to the console.

move on to the big piece surrounding the radio, if you have manual air controls, follow the instructions in the link, if now, just start pulling off starting at the bottom, it should all come off, then undo all the connections, and you are set.

if it doesnt make sense now, it will when you start. (I think.)

 

yeah... just be sure to pull up ONLY on the part that covers the parking brake, not the actual arm rest part

I'll be doing a head unit replacement in the next couple weeks. My Kenwood DNX5120 nav system has arrived, I'm just on hold for the HD radio module and the iPod cable. I may create/post a write-up if I have time, but I should be able to answer questions once I git-r-done.

 

okay I am a 5 speed so I am trying to work my way from center console and forward to the radio bezel piece.

Are you guys saying it is not necessary to remove the entire center console to free up the space for all the other trim pieces? I can't figure out how to get to one of the side screws as the drivers seat is in the way on the one side and the passenger seat on the other.

that 98 model write up is definitely different than a 99 set up.

 

With the exception of the type of trim around your gear shifter, this should be the same. No screws needed to be removed in a 99+ console

If you are talking about the screws that are in the center of the rear half of the console, DO NOT REMOVE THEM!! They secure the inner box to the outer console. You should only have to remove the two screws at the front of the rear half (front of the seat) and the 2 10 or 12mm bolts inside the console that hold it down in the back.

 

Just do what I do. Start removing screws and what not until you get the end result. J/K I don't know about the 99+ interiors. My 98 just took a few minutes of looking at it before i dove in. It was the external amp that threw me and I spent a few hours trying to figure out how to hook up my head unit.

 

thanks DeathCougar and Godzilla and pkt I got it all taken apart-the cupholder did finally pop up and out-now I am driving around with no radio surround bezel and no turn signals-I guess those run through the hazard switch.
