2000 toyota 4runner trany problems or not?
A friend of mine has a 2000 toyota 4runner with the 3.4. After backing out of his drive way and puts it into drive it does nothing its like he has hit nutral, But if he does from drive to first it will do just fine and after moving in first he can shift into drive and everthing is normal. No sliping at all! Any ideas what might be going on?

Ive had the same issue onetime after having a full throttle HARD snatch out of a mud pit for a few weeks, but then one day it all cleared up.. Im not sure if it was the same with your friend, but id gas it a little and it would "pop" make a noise and jerk into drive, I was really worried I broke the diff. I sheared a marine gear in an 04 tundra in the spring and the same thing happened as was going on with my runner... But then i got this popping sound that sounded like it was coming from my front diff at btwn 0-5mph for a few weeks... and now everything is fine for somereason... it went away after a trip from N. Fla to Va and back one wknd.... hmmm

but i guess what i was saying is it might be the rear Diff... otherwise you could drain diff and tranny and look for metal shavings... that would be a deff teller of whats going on

had he tried revving the engine after he shifts back into D? dumb question i know but.. im stumped... Have you tried having someone get under the vehicle to see if the driveshaft is turning, or if the connector link is moving?... also what about trying to shift from R to 4hi, then shift into D with 4wd engaged, that will rule out transfercase or diff..
This guy sounds like he may be having a simmular issue?...... https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f2/m...roblem-160358/

Watch out for "parts replacers" are they can be far different than actual mechanics.
It's not their money-they don't care.
If it really is the tranny, used units can be had all over the place for cheap. There are a lot of 3rd gens out there.

on my 2000 i have the same problem, i used to have this problem when it's shifted in reverse and nothing happened, it was in reverse. Now, when i'm idling or stopped for maybe a while and try do drive out it would just sputter and die, kinda like stalling in 1st gear in a stick shift car...
i'm unsure if its the IAC or the torque converter.
