2000 tacoma 2wd to 4x4 conversion

I have a 2000 tacoma Pre-runner 4cyl 2.7 2wd. It has a 6" Fabtech suspension lift and a 3" body lift. 33" x 14.50 boggers. Automatic trans.

I want to know if i can convert it to 4x4. I have a 1987 4 runner doner truck. Can i use the parts off of the 4 runner to convert my truck to 4x4. The 4 runner is automatic. Both trucks are independent front end.

Is it possible to use the parts from the 4 runner or is it impossible. Thanks for the help guys.

Nope.

Unfortunately the two have completely different front ends. You will have to get a newer version taco to "donate" parts to your truck. However, you could sell your 2wd and get an older 4wd with the money.

I am not sure there is a T-case that will be able to plug on to your transmission anyway, perhaps someone will be able to chime in. To me it seems far more "down to earth" to buy a 4wd rather than make one out of a 2wd, as a 4wd's differences are larger than just a transfer case and front diff with some shafts.

i know some people over at TTORA (www.tacomaterritory.com) have converted 2wd tacos to 4wd. you may want to search around over there too.

The T-case on the 87 4unner has the output on passenger side, newer tacomas do it on the drivers side.

You would have to source an auto tranny and tcase off a similar year tacoma 4x4 to make the 4x4 conversion. Then you would have to decide if you want an IFS 4x4 rig or a solid axle setup. I've had good luck finding parts at car-part.com, go do a search if you are serious.

Keep in mind that 4wd's tend to have stronger steering boxes, bigger fenders, different cross-members, different gearing, bigger axles...blah blah blah. What size axle is your rear? 7.5"?

should be the same an 8"

um you would need a new tranny for the 4x4 conversion.. I was thinking of doing it to mine since its also a 2wd. new tranny, new front end, t case some fab work underneath to support all of this.. new steering box. new center console. but ive heard its quoted around 1200 for parts.

after reading the above link it looks like a TON of work. Why not just run a SAS in the front end of a 2wd? It would seem to me that a new ECU would be needed also...Is that correct?
