285 is a great tire size for a 3rd gen runner. I am not trying to knock that. I am just saying that I wish I had bought 305s rather than 285s the first time. Just trying to save some one some money.

Okay, I have gone back and forth through the 305 and 285 delimma at least 10 times. hah.

Thing is, yes, you do have the limited flares.

Im going towards the 285's now for a few reasons:
1) More room in the wheel well for flex
2) Hopefully better on the road (witch 95% of my driving is on)
3) Better milage

Plus, I am going to get a 3.75" backspaced rim when I get new rims. This will stick them out further, and keep the width of the tire.

ah, ok. that's kind of not what you said above.

if you look at my quote, the 285's and 305's aren't 11.5" and 12.5" wide, even on the right sized wheel.

The flares aren't going to make the tarrs poke out further. that actually are out as far as yours, maybe my rilms are 4.0" and not 4.25. I'll have to mayzure it next time I have the wheels off.

 

I know you aren't, just wanted to be sure of what you were saying.

I too wish I'd gone with 305's the first time, I was going to but I listened to somebody on this board saying that wouldn't fit (only because it is something they hadn't tried so that "must" mean it won't fit) so I stupidly went with the 285's first. so I've gone 265/70 to 265/75 to 285/75 and the next set will be 305/70's.

 

yea, I agree with 2 and 3 but number 1, I don't flex that much since my suspension is the crappiest thing to hit the Toyota community so 1 is no concern of mine. hehe.

when I go to 305's I will be replacing my steering rack since the 285's have pretty much loosened it up to no fixin'. The 305's will probably do the same to the new one in time but I can live with it since one day it'll be a trail and outing fun rig only. long time away for that though.

 

the 285 busdted up your steering? Any way to prevent that. i to am going with 305s once the body lift goes on

 

Same exact sittuation. I have had each of those size tires because eighter the tire guy told me that they would not fit or someone on this board told me a was crazy for buy them. That was my main reason for suggesting that scrunner sould go ahead and get 305's and new rims.

Keisur so far so good with my steering rack. That was the only reason that I didnt get 315/75/16 (35's) is because everyone told me that the steering rack would have to be replaced frequently. 2 inches of tire is not worth that to me. I know that I would not be able to flex out all the way with out cutting with 315's but It would be more for street use and light off roading.

 

how expenisve is it to replace the steering rack?

 

I found a place that has reman'd ones for around 185. I don't care that it's reman'd simply becuase a new oem one is close to 500-700 clams. so I'd rather just spend for the reman'd, pull my old one and install the reman'd one. then I can just buy the parts to reman the stock one and swap it out when the reman'd one loosens up and rebuild it, and just do that over and over. or just keep getting reman'd ones since they charge a core. yea, wider tires tend to make the rack work harder. and mine has been through two front end collisions via my wife and a deer slaying via me so that must have pulled on that wimpy rack as well.

 

Not yet. Hopefully this weekend I will be able to take some.

 

The tough part is finding a remans set. I hope I dont get to much trouble out of the rack. Im planning on installing a cooler on the powersteering eventaully.

you could just ask them to find a big bottle and try to float it to you like a note.

 

I dont want some whale to end up with my steering rack. Maybe we could attach it piece by piece to birds as they migrate to hawaii for winter
