1st Gen Bikini Top Fab

On my way home from the muffler shop.....I stopped off and picked up some marine grade vinyl....webbing and buckles. All I need now is some 1" bar stock iron and a free weekend to design , fab(sew) , and install a nice Bikini Top.

I was about to buy one off the forum, but I like a challange. We'll see what I can come up with.

Cool, wish I had time to do the same. One that provided more coverage over the cargo area with maybe a support bow would be awesome.

I have purchased enough material to do just that; cover the cargo area. We'll see how my fab skills are in trying to find a way to keep the darn thing from taking flight!

What's the bar stock for? I've made numerous tonneaus and a couple of bikini tops, (and a number of dodgers for sailboats) and never needed any steel stock... Gonna use it to bend bows maybe? If so, aluminum tent poles work great! Fittings for it can come from boat top parts. For the 4R, I'd make the piece that bolts to the cab roof out of plywood. Seal it with epoxy or just paint it. Install screw-in snaps. Cheap and easy....

I was thinking of using the steel for the header bar....attaching the vinyl to the back of the cab using the existing mounting bolts from the top. The aluminum sheets I have are not thick enough and I have some steel at the shop. Yes....aluminium would be lighter and just as strong, if thick enough. The steel I have is 1" Tall x 1/8" Thick.

I had thought about the fiberglass or aluminium spars for a bow, etc. Have something else up my sleeve though!

Hey....theres always more than one way to skin a cat!

I'll keep you guys informed.....
