1998 4Runner antenna problem

Hey all, my 1998 4Runner Limited SR5,,,the antenna does not go up when I start up leaving me with next to none reception. I figured it's something in the wiring,,,any idea on how to fix?

Thanks to all.

Are you still using the factory head unit? Does the motor run and the antenna just doesn't go up? Give me some info and I'll try to help you out.

I got it figured out...it turns out all I had to do is tug on it a little and it pulled up by itself. As far as the status of the motor, not sure. I hear a short motor sounds when I cut the vehicle on and off...Ive just been leaving the antenna up 24/7.

the antenna is raised/lowered by a plastic cord connected with the motor, if the antenna does not go up and down but you hear the motor engaging on and off with the radio and/or ignition then this cord is probably broken. its a pretty common problem. you can get the new cord/antenna kit from the dealer. not cheap as is most everything with the dealer. you can change it without removing the fender completely but its not easy. good luck.
