1996 Tacoma engine replacement - which years will work
Hi to all! I wish I were here to help others (and hopefully in the future I can) but unfortunately I am looking for help/info at this time.
Here's my scenario:
I am in search of a low mileage(100k) 3.4L replacement engine for my 1996 Tacoma 4x4, auto 3.4L.
Does anyone know what YEARS of Tacoma/Runner/T100 I can get the replacement engine out of?
Should I stick with only engines from a Tacoma '96-'98?
Keep in mind that I have the 1st gen TRD (gray) supercharger installed now, and I do not plan on supercharging the replacement engine.
Thanks
PS -I guess I can be of some general help:
TIP: when you buy a used vehicle always look at the owner's manual. Evidently if the odometer was reset for any legitimate reason (odometer issue) the dealership will put a sticker on the owner's manual stating the year and mileage it was reset at (it is illegal to remove this sticker or the owner's manual from the glove box once it's on there) In my case the odometer read 130k and two weeks after I bought it I found THE STICKER; actual mileage 260K!! Goooood times. Buyer beware. Yes I should have known better.

Is there something wrong with your motor? just having 260k is far from reason enough to replace the motor. I know of a 4runner locally that has over 350k on the factory engine and other then basic maintenance it has not had a problem.
Drive it till it dies, change the oil regularly with good high quality oil and take care of it and it will take care of you.

Texas Ace,
Thanks for the reply. It's squirting coolant into cylinder #5 (passenger side closest to firewall) and I found out the guy had just replaced the head gaskets before selling it to me.

Far as which will work, i would try to find one from as close a year/model as your own. But if you are willing to swap all the external parts from your motor over to the new one any 5vz should be able to work.
The blocks themselves don't have any differences that i know of, just the external components/electric parts that can be swapped over.

Ah, ok. Yeah is the head gasket job was done once and didn't take usually better off just getting another motor.
