Question 16x7 wheels - a big limitation?

I have the original Toyota 16x7 wheels.
I heard that it's risky to put 285's on them, because they can go off the rims especially with lowered preasure.
Should I sell them and go for 16x8 ones?

I think you will be fine. I think it's easier to pop a bead when the wheels are too wide rather than too narrow.

the 16x8s will increase your chance of losing a bead when you air-down your tires.

why is it risky to run 285s with 16x7s?

Some tire guys don't like mounting tires designed to fit on a 8" rim on a 7" rim because of the possibility of warping the carcass of the tire. From a purely technical and design standpoint, it really is wrong to do that because the tire isn't intended to be mounted on that narrow of a rim and it puts the tire out of spec with regards to aspect ratio and section width.

But, as witnessed by a lot of us here on the boards, it doesn't seem to be a problem, now does it?

So, schlopecki, as the two previous posters mentioned, don't worry about it. I'm running them on my 16x7" wheels as well with no issues.

Peace.

Why does that tow strap look suspiciously like it was used recently in the bottom pic?

Cool pics, btw.

That day it was my first "mud experience" and yes I needed some help.
For my defense:
1) my 4Runner is rather stock - I'm working on it
2) my tires... BFG Rugged Trail... no comments... but wife approved budget for new shoes
