$1000 for a Clutch?

Based on several recommendations here, I decided it was time to get a new clutch because mine was beginning to chatter. I called the dealer, and they want $1000 at MINIMUM for it. Is this normal or should I shop around?

Don't have clues what shops charge. I did my own over a weekend.

yes thats what the dealer will charge-- but a clutch shop could do the work just the same for a lower price, somewhere in the neighborhood of 500 dollars. shop around

Marlin charged me less than 400 for an Asian cluch and install. Resurfaced flywheel and new carrier bearing and plate. Actually I paid like less than 250 but the tranny was already out.

$1000 seems really high, try a different dealer or a Toyota only shop.

Thanks for the info.

I know that I technically don't need the extra gripping power that the Centerforce Dual-Friction clutch provides, but there's a shop locally that will do the work for about $500. Is this a good clutch? How would it compare to stock? If the consensus is that it will work just fine, I will just get that as it will be a lot cheaper.

The Centerforce dual friction thing is about the worst clutch you can get. I have one in my truck and it will not hold the power. If I am accelerating very hard and shift quickly into 2nd the clutch will not grab and the engine just revs up into the rev limiter every time.

I have a new ACT clutch ready to go in. I know a guy that is running much more HP then I am and it is holding in his truck. He has the same pressure plate that I am going to use, but he is running a 6 puck clutch, mine is a solid sprung hub clutch.

Marlin sells good stuff. His HD clutch feels stock but never slips. Machine the flywheel to .0026 instead of .0022 and it will grab even harder.

I got my clutch installed with everything for $650 at the dealer.

$1000 is an absolute rip.

Gadget - Where did you get your ACT? My Centerforce Dual Friction is a POS and I need to do something about all this slipping.

rixham, I am looking for an ACT right now too. I went to their website ACT and gave them a call, they were happy to give me the numbers of a few shops that will sell to the public. The problem with their website list of dealers is that most of them are wholesale only.

I called Alder in Texas, (832)-237-8300 they quoted me a price for a 3rd gen of $420 plus shipping.

I dont really see the point in recommending a high performance clutch to rpeAMP unless he plans on pushing some major power. And no offense, but I just dont see that happening with the 3.0.

rpeAMP, what are your plans for the vehicle?

I think you should go with all OEM parts. The stock clutch will last forever if driven properly.

I think I've decided with an OEM clutch, but I'm not going to pay $1000 for it (which is, according to them at minimum). I will even drive somewhere else to avoid paying that much.

Preston-

Get ahold of TOR (Todd) here on the boards, get the parts, then call around for labor chargers. That would be the cheapest way to go.

Good luck!

Thanks so much!

I just hope that the clutch doesn't go out on me before I get this taken care of...

Thanks again, everyone, for the advice!

A high performance clutch does more than stand up to more power. It also prolongs clutch life with towing, four wheeling, and will hold up to future upgrades like a Marlin dual case. When in 4 low there is a tremendous amount of abuse to the clutch. Don't forget using the clutch and starter to start up steep hills so the truck doesn't roll back.

i had an ACT clutch in my pickup before i toasted it ant the tranny somehow. i had the solid disk and the i'm not going to the 6 puck. my 4runner is also going to be getting a solid disk from ACT until i swap to the LS1 and 4L60E tranny.

Well I got a quote from a local shop that will do everything (including labor) for $795 for a stock clutch. Seeing as that's the best price yet, I think I might go with it.

Clutch Quote

Hey man, whoever quoted you $1000 for the parts and install has been smoking some serious stuff!! We quote out $650 for the entire process and that is still a little high. Here is what I would think you would need worse-case scenario.

31250-35161-84 Disc $52.79
90363-12002-77 Throw out bearing $6.43
31210-35070-84 pressure plate $85.80
31230-35070-77 Clutch release bearing $31.89
Shipping: $10.00

All are remanufactured but are as good as new in my opinion. Let me know if you want to order any of them.

Todd

Todd,

Thanks so much for your reply.

I'm going to see if I can find someone here who will install this if I buy the parts from you.

I'll let you know very soon as I want to get this taken care of ASAP.
