1)Check Engine code 2) service bulletins

4WD Toyota tacoma 42,600 miles Check engine light came on; dealer and my favorite shop wanted 100.00 to tell me what the problem was. I went to autozone for a FREE reading, they read it a P1780; Transmission Control Switch (O/D cancel) out of self test range. On the internet I came up with P1780 being Park/Neutral Position Switch Fault. Are these the same thing? The light went out after several days but then came on again. I disconnected the battery to cancel out the light again. How soon do I need to get this fixed. The truck is "certified used" so I am hoping this is a warranty item.

My second question on Toyotas or any other vehicle. Is there a website that publishes listings of service bulletins?

I have never seen that code but I will look to see what i can find.

Here is a great site to help with recalls and TSBs:

It is a 2000 Tacoma, 6 cyl auto 4WD I'm trying to research as much as possible as the closest Toyota dealership ranks in the top 10 to avoid for sales or service. I will have to drive to drive 220 miles to the dealership I bought the truck from if this is a major problem.

I keep getting the code coming up as a:

P1780 Park/Neutral Position Switch Malfunction

I did also find the (Galen also has this in his OBD tech write-up):

P1780 Transmission Control Switch Circuit Out Of Self Test Range

I tend to think it is more likely the second one. You could just test the neutral safety switch yourself and see if it is functioning propery or just replace it and see if that fixes the problem. The part shouldn't be that expensive and could save you some headache at the dealer.

Looks like the switch has a 10 pin connector to it.

Code will set if more than one set of concacts points are closed.

(IE....shows p and rev at same time)

Also sets code if it sends a signal (park signal?)to the computer, while you are moving over 44 MPH for longer than 30 seconds.

Sounds like a bad switch to me, doesn't sound like it is a cheap one.

I have no idea what the switch would cost....PM Todd (TOR) and he can get you the best price.
