04 Taco - Periodic tentative starting....

04 Taco 3.4, 5-sp, 3 weeks old, 900 miles to date.

1 out of every 10 cold starts is, well, not soo smooth.

At the point when it would normally catch and fire it kinda stumbles, and then requires another 1.5 seconds of cranking.

I turn the key to the on position for a few seconds to let the fuel pump pressurize and then turn to start. I usually hold it till it starts, but as mentioned it not always smooth. Sometimes when its not smooth I stop cranking too soon and it doesn't start. I try it again and it starts smoothly as normal.

Don't think its like the truck is shaking violently and won't start. Its not. Just sometimes its cranky.
Its not really a bid deal, just seems odd.
Once started, it runs great.

Any ideas?
Similar experiences?

Thanks in advance

I really dont think its anything to worry about. Basically it sometimes just takes an extra second or two to start right? Mine does the same thing (1999 3.4 Taco, 72,000 miles). It scared me too at first cause my F-150 before it didnt crank at all....just started right up. Its just something you gotta get used to, just the way the engine is designed I suppose. I remember reading other posts about this and it seems perfectly normal.

This is a common problem in '04s of all kinds. Foreign and domestic. The general fix from the american car companies for this is to make a TSB to reflash the PCM and that seems to fix the problem for the most part. You might shoot an email to Yota and see what they say about having something in the works.

This is actually a common problem with the 3.4L Tacoma's. There is a pretty large thread about it on the TTORA message board. Toyota has denied that the problem exists. I haven't experienced this yet, but I only have 470 mi. on mine.

My 02 Taco is like that especially if we had a real cold night. I never have that problem with temps above, lets say 35 degrees.
