'03 Towing Question

I've got a V6 SR5 and the manual says to tow in 3rd gear rather than Drive. I'm towing about 2K lbs and was wondering if it would be harmful to use D or if I would actually get worse mileage because of being so far out of the torque curve. Anyone have any experience? Also, anyone suggest premium gas while towing (I've been using 89)? TIA

i tow a couple of seadoos on a pretty big trailer
& just turn off the overdrive so the tranny doesn't search
between drive & overdrive, it's hard on overdrive
