01 rear diff lock

01 rear diff lock

just got this truck an tried to turn on the locker. i dont think it works cause the light never quit blinking. its -5 here would this make a differnce. thanks

There is a way to jumper the locker motor with a 9V battery if the motor isn't working at the pinout. Sometimes the motors don't work from lack of use and road grime buildup. A thread on TTORA by Dick Foster how to clean the motor up.

I used to have an 04 Tacoma...light would blink and not stop in 4H or 2H.

Question:
Do you have it in 4L?? If i'm not mistaken rear locker only works in 4L.

at first i didn't but some where on here i found that out. i'm pretty sure i had it in 4lo, but i'll try it again when i get back in it. thanks

Try this: wait for a warmer day, drive a while in 2WD to warm up the rear diff, stop and go into 4lo, crawl in 1st gear few yards to be sure 4lo is engaged, stop and push rear diff locker button, crawl forward again in 1st gear 4lo at 1-2 mph while turning slightly back and forth for a distance of 10 or 15 yards if necessary. The turning seems to help the locker line up so it can engage. You also may need to turn slightly back and forth to disengage the locker.

When I go into 4lo at the beginning of trail, I always turn my locker on and off a couple times right away because it always engages slowly at first and needs a few yards and a short turn or two to engage. After a couple warm-ups, the locker engages/disengages almost instantly for the rest of the day and is ready to use when I really need it. Whenever the locker hesitates, a slight turn makes it happen.

Glad to help. If you've never had a truck with a true locker, you are going to be very happy when you find out what all your factory e-locker can do for you when the going gets really tough.

If it's an 01 then you don't have a rear locker. You do have a center "diff' lock that locks the transfer case. It changes it from AWD to 4WD. AWD allows more drivetrain slip but less traction. 4WD will give you better traction but on surfaces with more traction, like dry pavement, you will have more drivetrain binding.

Hi, Gerdo.
Sqdg71 said in his first post that his 01 is a "truck." I assume it's a Taco. If so, then his "locker" is probably the factory "rear-diff-locker" (e-locker), which has remained a Tacoma option from 96 to present. It was only us 4Runner guys that lost the rear-diff-locker option in 01, if I'm not mistaken.
(My fuel tank skid is still working great, by the way!)

if is has never been used before, the locker (on a brand new 1999 for example) is a bitch to get to engage automagically. you have to creep fwd, bkwd, wiggle a bit, eventually it will 'clang!' in....

so perhaps it is just stiff from lack of use.

mine took 2 years of using 4 times a month before i could get it to engage
right away. I mean, it always worked, but when it wanted to...I could creep a bit
back and forth and wait it out...

nowadays, it will always engage when I need it, or if I roll or rock
only about a foot fwd or backward if it isn't sync'ed. but when it was new and unused...quite hard to get it to engage.

My eLocker is like that. I have a 97 and for first 5 years of its life I doubt it was ever, every used.

Mine works but I have to stop, backup, go forward and after creeping along at 3 mph it clicks and light goes solid.

*** There is a specific procedure to get it to engage, or so I have heard. If you don't have one already, get the owners manual and read the procedure ****
