01 4Runner Alarm/Keyless Entry Confusion

Sorry to have to post this, since there are dozens of similar posts. But sometimes too much information is just too damn confusing or too inconclusive. I can't find anything conclusive. I have found plenty of info referring to RS3200, RS3200+, factory installed, dealer installed, dealer port, aftermarket, etc, etc, etc ... but I just don't know what the hell I have and I need to replace my remote fob (prefer not going to the stealership).

Have owned a 2001 4Runner I purchased used back in 04. Sometime ago my key and fob was lost. My fob is the one pictured.

I do not have a "Security" light on the center dash beside the Passenger Seat belt light, I have an LED as pictured, beside the instrumentation light switch and steering wheel.

I am completely confused with regards to whether I have a Factory Installed system, a "Dealer Port" or aftermarket.

I checked under the dash and can locate a shock sensor (part number 00014-S0274) and a main module (part number 00012-KU100).

Pretty sure I don't have engine immobilizer, as the spare I had made after buying the 4Runner works, and it doesn't have a transponder (and I certainly wouldn't have known how to bypass).

Any suggestions?

I was going to purchase this, but hear so many ppl talk about obtaining the wrong remote.

Much Appreciation in advance!

Thanks,
Eric

The alarm system on your rig is possibly aftermarket KARR alarm. Sometimes toyota dealers do not install OEM alarm with new cars. Instead, they may use other aftermarket brands such as KARR. KARR user manual can be found here: http://mikehmayer.com/stuff/xB/KARR%204040a.pdf.

Check the the back of the fab, and there should a FCC number, possibly HYQ1512Y. Go to eBay, and you should be able to find a toyota remote with the same FCC number. Hope this helps.

Thanks, I briefly reviewed that and based on the 'vague' description on the LED and valet button, function and features (including shock sensor and location) this could be it.

When I meant my fob is the one pictured, I meant it looks like that, I cannot check the FCC #, because I don't have my fob.

Just found this post!

So, txt4r I appreciate it! Looks like the FCC you mention is also the one for the one I linked above ... not so sure I want to try eBay, seems like more get remotes that do NOT work than do. Did you get one from eBay that worked?

Is there a way to verify what FCC ID my system requires?

The FCC code that txt4r posted should work. There are only 2 or three different FCC ID's and HYQ1512Y is the one that U.S. 4Runners use, and Canadian models use the other variation(s). I think.

Yes, toyota dealership. But that would cost a lot.

I would suggest to get the one that I mentioned from eBay (I got mine for about $30 shipped), if it does not work, try the other one (don't know FCC number, though). One of the two must work.

My truck has the same alarm like yours (same location, push-in red LED button). I bought my 4R last year, but there was no user's manual for the alarm. I wanted to program the alarm, and it took me two days to find out what that alarm is.

Good luck.

Just giving an update. I went to the dealer today - had to get some console trim fasteners anyway (for the console 'kick panel' pictured below). Only $4 for a couple.

For grins I gave them my VIN to check on my remote.
Provided no FCC ID, just a PN (don't have it right now) and a price - $136!
Spoke with service and they said the programming would be $103!
I am certainly not paying over $200 for this, I could get an aftermarket installed and ready to use for much less than that. I'll probably try some from ebay, but read further for my concern after talking with Toyota service.

Service guy actually suggested against getting a remote and programming it. He said that with older vehicles the programming often times will damage door locks necessitating replacement. He said he had a 2001 Sienna in recently for a programming and they had to replace 4 lock mechanism because of the programming procedure 'burning them up'.

Seems strange to me. I'll search for that problem to see if I should just go the route of an aftermarket Keyless and Alarm.
