01-02 tails on a 99 4Runner

Wow, so I swapped out my stock tails yesterday, makes the 4Runner look a lot nicer from sides and rear. It was relatively painless to do. I found the set, with harnesses on ebay for about 35-40

make sure your panels are not cold/brittle or you may crack them
  1. Remove back trim piece (between carpet and seal, 5 screws)
  2. take out left tail, separate harness and set aside
  3. remove bracket that holds luggage cover, "pop" side loose, about 2-3 inches
  4. remove grounding bolt from harness, unplug wires, and pull harness and rubber grommet out
  5. put new harness in place, re-attach ground, make sure to get other grounds too, plug in and seat the rubber grommet
  6. attach harness to tail assembly and reinstall on car
  7. reattach side panel with a few well placed hits with your palm
  8. right side is similar, but has less clearance due to storage compartment
  9. reattach trim piece between carpet and seal, be sure to line up carefully

That looks so good! I've wanted to do that for several years...I can't seem to find those lights cheap enough for my liking, yet. Very nice.

looks nice! Who did you buy them from on ebay? Was it just one set they were selling, or do they have more sets?

thanks ...yeah, it comes down to checking ebay... pretty much have to search real broad... [4runner -"clear corner" -"clear bumper"] on ebay, I searched 3 or 4 times over a week and caught them... searched through several items, sometimes people misspell and list poorly, unless you browse several items, you wont find these deals...

on a side note, I'll prob keep my old ones as spares if i crack a lense, unless anyone thinks i could get over $100 for the set of 99 tails and harnesses???

From "matrixtommy" ... it looks like he had a completely random selection of parts, didn't see any more... they were used, but in good condition, they need to have a few scuffs cleaned up (easy with polishing compound) and clay-bar'ed to remove some sort of overspray or residue (easy once its a little warmer and i wash my car) but these things arent noticed at all, and arent permanent

Just teasing since the term "rice" can apply to stuff like corner lights, the OEM hoodscoop,Tacoma skidplate are all items that enhance appearance with no performance value which I have all but never oversize rims on my truck which is the worst *bling* out there on a 4wd 4Runner IMO.

I was just poking fun like we did back in the '90s at the guys with Hondas with chrome altezzas on 'em. Don't get me wrong I'd love a pair of those tails but my budget is kinda tight. I like 'em.

looks awesome dude! definitely love those ones vs the frosted ones. nice score btw...ive been searching myself for a set...but no luck. trying to find some oem 00+ headlights and tail lights is like trying to find the proverbial needle in a haystack...

double - yeah no kidding, luckily my 99 has the better headlights as far as I know...
x-aw - ok just checking... I'm limiting my external randomness to minimal amounts of non-oem at least, maybe an oem scoop hood later, "back in the 90's" ??? man i was only five then, and I still do that my definition of rice is similar to yours... but applies to things obviously non-functional, mainstream ridiculous, and def not oem

Looks good...I love my stock 02 tails and wouldn't think of changing to anything else.

If you want to take it up a notch, get some chrome turn signal bulbs (looks chrome when off but blink yellow) These will get rid of the yellow that shows through the clear portion of the lens and really cleans up the look but it will still look stock. I put some of these on mine and could not believe the difference. Good cheap mod, no performance gain but it looks good.

Have the same mod and love the "newer" look of the truck. I'll second the chrome bulbs but I took it up a notch and put the chrome bulbs in the turn signals up front as well. This was a tip from Fink.

thanks for the idea of the chromes you guys, i had to get a couple new bulbs, but the autozone here didnt even varry them in amber let alone any chrome versions, I'll have to get in contact with Jason B or elsewhere... I figure the new bulbs should get me another 8 whp on the dyno, ... lol, but seriously, yeah I'm planning on switching those out soon

now just need to talk the neighbor into trading hoods for $100... hehe, allready same color, and its an older woman who could care less, anyone say 'hood scoop'

PIAA makes a chromed bulb that lights brighter than my amber bulbs. Pretty sweet... Jason B will have them.

I think i remember a website that sold the whole package (harnesses and lamp housings) but I cannot remember what the name is, all I remember is that it had a yellow background on the site, and was geared towards toyotas. any ideas? lol
