Yota_Disaster's 1987 Pickup Build-Up Thread

This is my build up thread on my 87 yota pickup.I have currently only owned the truck for about 4-5 days now. When i bought it the truck was stock as a rock with mix matched wheels and tires all the way around. The guy that owned the truck before me also had the torsion bars cranked up so tight that the suspension had no give what so ever and about 35-45 mph it started to do the "Death Wobble".

:This is what the truck looked like the day i bought it:

The front tires in this picture were 235/75/15's if i remember correctly and the back tires were 31/10.50's and bald as can be.Every rim on the truck was also a different width and someone done a pore job on the wheels by trying to cut out the center wholes of the wheels to make them clear the front hubs and rear drums.

:Changed the wheels over to a matchin set of 15x10's:

as you can tell the back tires are slick as a baby's butt. The front ones are dry rotted so bad i dunno how they even hold air.

"Started working on the dash a little bit"

:Another view of the dash:

:The Somewhat finished product:

:Repainted the front bumper and door handles.I also decided to put on my yota tag.:

icked me up some used 33/12.50/15 Nitto Terra Grapplers (or how ever you spell it):

:The last pics i have as of right now was me playing around with some stencils i hand made:

This is what i have gotten so far sense i bought the truck about 4-5 days ago.Stay tuned as there will be more updates and things coming soon as i get the time to work on it some more.

Looks pretty solid, I'm jealous of hiw far your tires stick out, in pennsylvania you can't have them sticking out at all, even though mine do a little bit. and i like the color that's the color I'm plannin on my 87. Rattle can or actual spray gun?

i used a rattle can on it.Give me like 10 minutes and ill tell you the name of what paint i used but its like 8.00 a can.Thats the good thing about Tennessee we have no vehicle inspection laws or none of that junk if it runs its road worthy lol.The picture makes them look like they stick out farther then they actually do.They only stick out about 3" on the front and probably around 5-6" in the back.I'm running 10" wide wheels with 12.50" wide tires.

Did you prime it? Or just sand and paint? And about how many cans did the cab take if you remember? Haha. and my rears stick out like two inches, but we have dumb laws and inspection, but it is nice knowing there isn't and dangerous vehicles coming toward you

Nah i didn't prime it i just scuffed up the truck with some fine grit sand paper this Rust-Oleum flat paint acts as a primer it goes on nice and thick and covers pretty darn good.I am wanting to say some where around 7-8 cans to do the whole outer body minus the truck bed. They don't even bother trying to pass it in Tenn. because they know us residents couldn't afford it and wouldn't pay if we had to.Taxes & Gas prices are bad enough in this state.

There pretty bad here too. and i did the back of my cab from the bottm of the window down in black already, so.I'm only doing my cab, nd basicly only what you can see, so you think 5 cans would do it?

Not right off hand buddy i sure don't i do know they however i bought them off of a 97 Extended Nissan Pickup 4x4 i cleaned them up an painted them and everything of course but i'm not really sure on the backspacing all i know is that there 10"s wide and there pretty darn deep dished as well.To the best of my knowledge they are just your standard 10' wide steel wheel so if you can find the back spacing specs on a regular 10' wide rim then the backspacing should be the same as the ones i've got.lol sorry if i sound confusing i just never have went by backspacing i have always threw them on the truck if i liked the way it looked i bought them lol.Thank your for the compliment by the way.

:Truck Update:
I haven't really gotten to do much to the truck here lately other then bought new windshield wipers and repainted the red lens inside the tailight because apparantly the cop that pulled me over lastnight doesn't seem to like the idea of having bright tailights,,,I was like when did that become a law so your saying a bright tailight is suppose to be worse then a dim or broken tailight???....He let me off with a warning and busted my nuts because of my busted windshield.....gotta love Tennessee Police...(Go Back to watching porn, eating doughnuts & drinking coffee and leave me alone!)

Thumbs down Update (Bad Day For Me & The Yota)

Truck Update

Well...Yesterday was a bad day for the yota all together. The carb started acting up badly and was dumping so much fuel that it was fouling out my spark plugs but while i was in the midst of working on the carb i go to get into the truck to drive it back to the house so i could actually be able to work on it without everyone coming through pizza plus parking lot wondering what was going on and i stuck it in reverse and the next thing i know my break pedal went to the floor board.Well i got out popped the hood again to make sure when i put my breather back on that i didn't leave a vacuum line unhooked some where causing my brake booster to fail thus resulting in no break pedal.I then checked my brake fluid level on the master cylinder to make sure that it was up to the line that says max.It was a little low so i topped it off to the max line on the resevoir.I got back in the truck and pumped the brake pedal a couple times and it actually started to pump up so i closed the hood and took off down the road heading to the house to work on it once again.I didn't make it 50 feet both back break lines blew out and i dang near took out a church sign and one of those big ole electrical units that you see setting on the side of the road with metal boxes around them every once in awhile.so i whipped it into the church parking lot by the point im so pissed off i can't even thing between the car screwing up and just about wrecking the truck due to brake failure i was at my boiling point.I get out smoke a cigg and try to chill out for a minute and i look down at my feet and see brake fluid pouring down the parking lot.i put out my cigg and crawled under the truck to have a look and sure enough both brake lines right above the gas tank on the passenger side were pouring brake fluid.I have no choice but to call a tow truck and have it towed to my house.I then go home and start ripping it apart.Dropped the gas tank and started removing the brake lines.I then went and ordered two new pieces of brake line exactly 36 inches long and four packs of fittings so that i could tie them into the proportioning valve located on the back of the frame rail on the passenger side sense the lines were obviously factory and wouldn't come out of the proportioning valve and no one around here sells the valve i had to make due with what i had.So 45 minutes in pizza plus parking lot 2 hours in the church parking lot working on the truck and waiting on the tow truck driver to arrive, an hour or so drive it seemed like to my house,3 hours under the truck removing the gas tank, old brake lines,10 minutes at Oriellys and 30 minutes to replace one brake line once i got back from the parts store & still have another one left to do.

Total Cost
60.00 For The Tow
35.29 For The Fittings & Brake Lines
13.00 For Three Packs Ciggs
+ One Pissed-OFF Yota Owner
Grand total of = 108.29

Needless to say i haven't even gotten to touch the carb yet which is what i was working on before everything else flew apart! So god only knows what i'm going to run into when i start working on it and who knows what to expect money wise.

Anyways here are a few pics i managed to take on my cell phone while i was taking a smoke break.

Our company trucks brakes went out on me awhile back. I know the excitement. You havent lived life until your brakes go out unexpectedly. At least you are ok and no damage done. I feel your frustrations with the broken bolts/lines. Maybe things will smooth out for you soon.

Reply To Terry & Todays Progress(So Far)

Thanks for the post Terry....Yea when you go for your brakes and they go to the floor and your still gaining speed its a scary situation.Mean while i got the brakes & Brake Lines fixed. Now i went to take her out for a spin yesterday and ended up busting the main gas line some how..(No Surprise) also for some reason when the clutch is pressed in it grinds while trying to go into reverse some times and also when your gear down at a redlight or just in general for that matter it grinds or catches a little bit when you go into third and first gear you pretty much have to cram it in while gearing down but when up shifting from 1st to 5th shifts smooth as silk so needless to say it pretty well has me puzzled.

:Today's progress so far:

Cleaned Up The Engine Bay A Little

:Re-Painted & Painted Some Other Interior Pieces:

:Still On The To Do List For The Day:

1.Drop The Gas Tank For The Second Time
2.Replace All The Gas Lines Going To The Gas Tank
3.Bolt The Gas Tank Backup
4.Bleed The Clutch To See If It Helps With The Grinding Problem When Gearing Down & When Trying To Put It In Reverse.
5.Hopefully Call It A Day!

Have you tried changing the transmission fluid to help with the grinding?

No but ill do that i never even thought about it till you mentioned that.Thank You By The Way.

:Update:
1.Drop The Gas Tank For The Second Time....Done
2.Replace All The Gas Lines Going To The Gas Tank....Done
3.Bolt The Gas Tank Backup....Done
4.Bleed The Clutch To See If It Helps With The Grinding Problem When Gearing Down & When Trying To Put It In Reverse.....Done (Still Not Solved)
5.Hopefully Call It A Day!...Done But Not Finished

Welp now the starter came lose and wasn't making contact to the fly wheel because SOME PREVIOUS OWNER GENEIOUS decided that the starter only needed one bolt to hold it on to the motor in which wasn't even finger tight either! Shade Tree Mechanics I swear do more harm then good to a truck most in which have good intentions but screw up more then they fix or make the problem their working on ten times worse! Any who i got it all bolted back together with TWO BOLTS and made sure they are nice and tight and now it works like a charm. No more ear piercing fly wheel torture! How ever it did end up with me having to tow it home for the second time in three days so that down right pretty much pissed me off and to make things worse both times it has been towed home were by FORD trucks for crying out loud.Such a disgrace to the yota name not to mention HUMILIATING having to be towed home by a FORD! lol...Tomorrow starts a new day so lets see what might fly apart next! Feel free to comment lol.

I think it is standard repair any more on these is to fix someone elses half butted fix on these. I dont think I have ever seen so much jury rigging on any other make as these trucks.

New fluid cant hurt, but I know it does take alot of bleeding the lines to get the clutch to work. I was about to think I had some other problem when I finally got some more air out. Is the slave cylinder bolted up to the tranny like it should be? I have seen that before where they didnt bolt it down, it was just connected to the lines.

Yea i know what you mean Terry this is my 5th 80's model 4x4 and everyone i have had has taken me months to sort everything out but once i did they all usually ended up being great running trucks except for the whole frame rot issue on one of them.

To be honest i haven't gotten to look at the slave yet because it was dark as dark could be outside and it was 11:45 P.M. before i finally got the starter fixed on it but i'll be sure and check it today while i'm under the truck checking for leaks in the gas lines, break lines, ect. The clutch its self feels like it should its about as stiff as a yota clutch can get and it doesn't feel spongy and it doesn't slip or anything that's what makes me think that maybe when they changed the clutch they didn't change the pressure plate or throw out bearings.
