As the title states, that may be my problem. I just got a rebuilt 22re engine installed in my 1987 4runner.
I've only had it since april of this year and coming back on a trip it threw a rod. Some background, the guy I bought it from changed a few things: he put a K/N filter on it rendering it a hot air intake lol (I didnt change it back to the original air intake system till after the rebuild), changed the diffs to 4.88s, put some spacers on the front control arms, raised the rear, put 33s, and 15 in rims on it.
So long story short since getting it back Ive had a few issues occur. First it was the fuel lines getting too hot, causing some preignition/fuel possibly boiling in the lines, this caused it to only throw the knock sensor code (likely due to k/n filter). So I recovered the fuel lines in heat shield tape as it originally was when I bought it, this fixed that issue for the most part as it didn't throw the code anymore. But I still felt a misfire/heard a quiet pop sound that occured sporadically, most often around 2500+ rpm, but no knock sensor. So I figured I would just change the air intake back to the original set up. I also changed the TPS since after getting to temp at idle the rpms would dip and come back up. So I changed the air intake and tps...now it runs rough at crusing speed and trips the knock code, the afm code, and codes 6 & 8. Could this be that the afm may need to be recleaned as it could have caused some dust/dirt to get on the contacts? This sunday after I work the next couple of days I plan to take the AFM apart and clean it off with carb cleaner and a micro fiber towel. I assume that it shouldn't hurt...
