Hey guy's been a long Journey with this truck and a lot of history since I've owned it 5 years ago and recently got it back. This build thread is the start to a bigger project then it already was first gotta give some history of the truck and what its been through in the last 5 years and how I got it back and then of course the awesome build pics to come of all the goodies that are being put on it. I was able to dig up some old pics of the truck when I first owned it on a flash drive I found from a shoebox in the closet.








Its a 1989 Toyota Pickup DLX ext. cab 4x4 22re 5 speed. I got it on a trade in 08' My junior year of high school. The upgrades it had back then were:

I owned it for almost three years I put a spare tire rack in the bed and built a front bumper for it. And rebuilt the head after a small radiator hose blew and overheated the engine.





After selling it back to my buddy David he didn't like how underpowered the motor was and started talking to me about putting a turbo on it. His brother was moving out of state and had a bone stoke turbo Mazda car with a bad transmission he wanted 150 bucks no title. we didn't care just we had to tow it with a strap 30 miles from town. After that adventure we started tearing apart the Mazda and all the parts we needed from it. First thing we did was build a new flange for the turbo so a down pipe could be used then we mocked the turbo up for fitment and of course since we got a whole junkyard turbo set up for $150 we weren't gonna spend $800 on a manifold so I had to build one. I don't have any pics of the finished product got lucky enough to find these!

All the welds were on a little Lincoln Buzz box 110v wire feed welder I took about 5 hours to weld cuz it would only let me do a 4" weld on high heat before shutting down and i'd have to wait 15 minutes until it kicked back on again:




Long story short it took a couple weekends putting it all together putting an oil drain in the pan, finishing exhaust, piping to intake (non intercooled system, blow off valve, vacuum lines, etc etc. after it was all said and done the efi system hated the turbo on the truck so we adjusted everything, timing ,tps, mass air and we kinda got it to run right but it didn't help that our first run on the highway the truck caught on fire under the hood. The high pressure hose that was installed on the turbo wasn't high heat rated the hose melted along with all the vacuum lines spark plug wires and wiring harness. we spent all night rewiring the truck to get it running again. Got it running and it ran better than before everything melted. David kept the truck for about a month or two after that then sold it to some dude off craigslist that lived in Las Vegas. A month later I get a text from David with pics of all the work the guys done to it. H ripped out the Mazda turbo put a t3/t4 turbo with a waste gate ran aluminum tubing with an intercooler all throughout the truck sunk about $1500 into the truck but still couldn't get the truck to run right. Never got a text or heard from the guy after that.

On Sunday August 25, 2013 my girlfriend and I were in a serious car accident on the way back from Flagstaff, AZ our car hydroplaned at 80 mph and we were both ejected. She was flown to Vegas and I stayed in the hospital in Kingman for 2 weeks. She had a 6 mm brain bleed, compressed lumbar fracture, and a medial-lateral tear on her knee. I had 4 fractures in my back, fractured tail bone, and 21 stitches on my elbow.

A couple days layin in the hospital bed I found my old 1989 Toyota pick up on craigslist for 4,000. Having no money or even being able to walk I shrugged my shoulders and said dammit if I wasn't in this damn accident I could've bought it. Well after 2 weeks in the hospital and a couple weeks at home starting to walk again and do things on my own the truck was still on craigslist relisted for 3000. After the wreck we were waiting on a settlement from the insurance company. I also had a Polaris ranger 6x6 I got for free on a job. Needed a lil work but it ran and drove great. Finally after a month after the accident I called him and offered a trade for the truck. I sent him pics and info the next day he said yah lets trade. So I loaded up the 6x6 and drove 2 hrs to north Las Vegas, NV the guy was so big he barely fit in the 6x6 he had to adjust the steering wheel all the way up and it still touched his gut. We still made the trade and it was a shock to see how neglected the trucks been just sitting outside his house rotting away.

Thanks Milkybar were doing a lot better now Courtney's gone back to work and I go to Flagstaff to see a specialist next week to see if I can go back to work. And all the goodies to start the build are here!!!!!

When I go back to work I will be able to afford all of the little items needed to finish it oil/ filter, antifreeze, fuel filter, fuze panel, new battery, wire, heat shrink gasket sealer, BOV bung welded, air filter pipe built etc. etc.

A few weeks ago before ordering all the parts I started the tear down.













After tearing it down I started pressure washing and cleaning all of the engine parts and engine bay purple power, a scrub brush, and a pressure washer go a long way. And a little dark metallic paint helps too.
















I was able to get this far before all my parts started showing up. Ive just been stockpiling the parts until I go back to work. The plan is to keep the stock ecu for everything but the engine management. That's what the stand alone kit is for. Everything in the wiring harness runs to the stock ECU. I want the truck to still have A/C and heat, Power steering, stereo turn signals, lights etc. etc. I have a jeep that's my daily driver this will be my toy and eventually show truck I plan to later replace most of the sheet metal and paint it the same as my RC trucks I race. Eventually use the truck to travel to races around the tri state.




More updates as soon as I go back to work and make a paycheck then its yota time!

Hell yeah dude!!!! Im diggin this build, and Im also a big R/C guy. Havent done much with the S/C trucks, but I have the entire Traxxas Stampede lineup from the Monster Jam trucks to Nitro and 4x4 Stampedes. Glad to hear you and the little lady are doing well and its nice to see you get your old truck back.

Thanks Man i've only been racin RC cars for about 6 months and SC trucks is where the sports going to more realistic racing lots of fun the more I race the faster I get. And my girlfriends been getting better too. Couple days ago My buddy came over and he got a wild hair to get workin on the yota. We got the lower intake on, fuel injectors, cut stock wiring harness to only the wires needed, mounted the SDS computer, ran the fuel lines and tightened up and fixed a lot of loose ends. I spent today doing the vacuum lines and getting the old water ports plugged. All that's left is wait for all my electrical supplies (fuse blocks, wire, fuses, butt connectors, heat shrink, wire loom, Relays, connectors). But hers some pics of the progress.

I have a stupid question for you. Did you sell a complete front axle to a guy from Vegas? That backyard looks familiar. Anyways if so that was me nice truck good luck!!

Hell yah CHEEZE!!!!! thats my old 81' solid axle see you didn't like the orange paint lol. I checked out your thread looks like youve put that straight axle to use good job on the swap looks clean.

This past week has been crazy I finally go back to work this Friday the day after Thanksgiving. My parts showed up last week but it rained for 3 days and couldn't start til Sunday. So ive spent the last 3 days routing, chasing, and splicing wires.

I ran 3 relays Electric fan, Fuel pump, and fuse block in cab for SDS and accessories. So far ive got almost every wire ran through the firewall and engine bay. First I mounted the first fuse block and the relays then I wired the SDS relay for the 10 position fuse block. The fuel pump relay will be wired to the SDS computer so its separate from the stock ECU. (yes im running the stock ECU also cuz every wire including the cab light is controlled through the stock ECU) all the wires are loose layed nothings going to be buttoned up and wire loomed until everythings been test and the trucks been started up and test drove.

I also ran a new 14 gauge wire to the fuel pump back to the relay im having a problem though after ive wired all three relays and tested that they are all working properly the relay shows its giving the pump power and I tested the wire at the pump (slid the bed half off to do the wiring) and it shows power for 3 seconds like the SDS computer is supposed to do but the fuel pump isn't turning on. So I tested the ground wire its grounded and then I ran a wire from the positive side of the battery back to the fuel pump with the test light and its showing that the power side of the pump is grounded too. It was getting too dark to pull the fuel pump so ill have to do it tomorrow. Everything was working fine before I ran the new wire I just wanted a separate relay and its a safety fuel shut off for the system. Anybody else know why the pumps doing that now? its only a 2 wire pump one +/- simple so I thought but heres some pics of the progress.

Alright my buddy David came over today AKA the guy who started this whole turbo build 2 years ago when he owned it. We fixed the fuel pump issue bad ground who woulda thunk. I drilled holes in the dash for the fuel line gauge and oil gauge wires. Also adjusted the hall sensor so it lined up with the magnets on the pulley. Thats a trip cuz it has 3 magnets and 2 out of 3 kick the fuel pump on so i know that 2 out of the 3 magnets were lined up its was a PIA to line up the sync i ended up putting washers behind the sensor to make it closer to the pulley. We also cut the muffler of so it'll be straight piped all the way later on. Ive still got alot of wiring left mostly gauges and electric fan overide. The goal is to have it running, tuned, and driving before December 21st for our local tuff trucks competition.

Been off the site for a while I still have the truck. I've got it running and drove it but the electric fan doesn't pull enough cfm's and I never upgraded the fuel system with a aftermarket fuel pressure regulator thats which us causing the inhectors to run lean under boost. Been thinking about solid axle swapping it and turning it into a nasty exo caged turbo crawler i don't think i've seen it done yet.
