Pumpjacks 92 Pickup

Just picked up this truck after wanting one for a very long time. It has a 22RE and a 5 speed. It has 106,000 miles. 31" tires. So far I have replaced the rear shocks, 1 cv shaft, tailgate handle, parking brake cable, and a few small interior pieces that were missing. I need to replace the rear bumper, get the AC and cruise working, upgrade the radio, zuk mod. This list will grow as I think of things that need to be done.

Welcome aboard, friend!

And welcome to the club of extended cab Yota pickups!

You've done a great job of keeping her fresh..with such low miles, I'm sure she'll stay fresh and take care of you for many miles to come!

Thanks guys. I am pretty happy about the low miles, but the PO sure did a number on this thing. Every one of those miles appears to be hard ones.

Ahh, those stock rear bumpers are worthless anyways.. I bent mine on a freekin 1 inch diameter sapling! Tons of custom steel options if you can weld!

Are those 31 x 10.5 tires?

I have a homemade bumper sitting in my shop waiting to be put on. It is nothing to fancy, I bought it off a friend and have been doing some modifications to it. And, yes the tires are 31x10.50.

Scored some parts from a fellow Toyota owner.

Factory skid plate
Washer fluid tank
Factory tire/tool kit
Factory spare tire winch
Interior dome light lenses
Factory front bumper

And he has a lift kit I might buy from him when he takes it off his truck. I have been having trouble finding parts at salvage yards. Turns out the all the guys I know have been taking them when they find them. Just saving me a trip to the salvage yard

Got the bumper put on. I don't like it very well. Seems to be a little wide, and not the best design. But, I got it nearly free so it will do for now and is a lot better than the old one. I also put on new steering stop caps, so no more creaking

Just got my new springs for the zuk mod. They will be going in tomorrow. Also washed the truck for the first time so I took a pic. You can kinda see the sag.

This is after the zuk mod. It settled a little bit more after this picture, and now it sits perfect. Also I took the truck offroading last weekend and it performed great. I can tell how much some lower gears would be nice.

So I have been driving the truck a lot lately just trying to figure out how reliable it is going to be and so far no issues. I took it in for an alignment and I was told I needed new lower ball joints. So that is on the list. One thing that is bothering me though is sometimes the speedometer doesn't work until a few minutes after ive been driving. Also the engine kinda surges and jerks when I turn the headlights on when im driving down the road. Does anyone know what could cause this.

Looking good. Truck definitely looks better now with new front and rear bumpers.

I've heard that issue with surging/jerking when the headlights are turned on. It could be a ground issue? also check if your your voltage regulator or your alternator is malfunctioning.

You'll need a new speedometer cable. And the surging could be your alternator, since turning on your headlights takes power away from the ignition system. That would be my guess. I have a 22re as well, just put a rebuilt one in my 89 4runner. Good find by the way, I don't see a lot of rust. As long as the previous owner kept up regular maintenance, you shouldn't have any major problems for a long time.

I will check the alternator. And I don't think the PO maintained the truck very well at all. I'm noticing some smoke on startup and after idling for awhile. The truck needs a lot of tlc but it is getting there.

Toyota had a recall on the steering linkage for that generation. Take it to a dealer and they will run the VIN. You might luck out and get them to change it out. I had a 91 4Runner and they were still honoring the recall a few years ago. Just seen you mention the ball joints. I see the truck has been sold from Shepard Auto. There is a good salvage in Springfield if you are far from there.

The dealer is doing the recall I just have to replace the lower ball joints first. The dealership wants 700 to do it. So I will do it myself then go in for the recall and alignment. Springfield is about 3 hours from me. But thanks for the tip on the salvage yard I will check it out next time I am over there. Do you know what all parts they replace in that steering recall?

As far as I know it is just the steering rack. They have a different name for it that I cant recall. Some in my area call it the Drag Link. I wonder if they will just exchange your old rack and you do the rest of the front end yourself?
