parkkicks' 1987 Pickup Build-Up Thread
Hey everyone. i decided to make a build thread even though it will take several years for me to do everything i want and may be months before something new is done.
Im 16 so i have school and only work 10 hours a week. i have little mechanical experience and a small garage but have a redneck friend and a shop to help me out some
so just a warning dont go yelling at me to do a sas swap cause it will take awhile for me to come up with the cash
so here we go
I bought a 1987 4x4 pickup with 250k miles on the body and 20k on a rebuilt 22r for 2500 bucks. came with 50% on 31" m/t's from les schwab.

the truck runs very well except the first week the ignition coil went out so i picked one up from a junkyard for 50 bucks
first thing i did was take out the vinyl matting. there was a hole under the clutch pedal where water was leaking in so i decided to pull it up before any serious corrosion started. so i took the seats out and pulled it up and almost
ed. the insullation underneath was all moldy and wet. so i pulled it all out got some hard core cleaning solution and scrubbed away at my floor pans for a couple hours. then went to home despot. (yes despot) got some carpet padding threw it on scrubbed out the vinyl put it back on and had a great almost new interior. oh and i picked up a matching rubber mat from napa for 3 bucks and glued it over the hole with contact cement.
(Kinda dirty now cause its been snowing like crazy here)

then after browsing ebay i ran into some cheap red ricer pedals that i just couldnt resist.
After that i hit up the local wrecking yard and found a rear tube bumper and nerf bars off of an 86
sanded and painted them and got the bumper on only needing to drill 2 holes. the nerf bars are going to have to wait untill i head to my friends shop for some welding.

oh and i got a black diamond plate box from joes for christmas

next up is a header and exhaust. im looking at an lce header and a magnaflow muffler and high flow cat. hit me up with suggestions
and remember... this will be a SLOW build
Thanks
Parker

Looking good! Keep up the hard work. It's good to see young people making the most of what they have. There are lots of little things you can do to make your rig yours and better without spending a lot of money.

tis a fine looking rig!
yeah you gotta pay to play, but after the time it takes to put what you want on it, it'll be so nice; and it just feels so much better when you put something on the truck that you've been saving up for for so long...
I wish I could have got ahold of my Toy at 16; at that age I was too into lowriders to even think about owning a 4x4, lol. and yes, I dropped every nickle and dime I made and saved flipping burgers into that thing!
I don't know about the ricer style pedals, but I remember being 16, so I'm not gunna bark at you about em
plus I had a set on my lowrider when I was 16, so I have no room to talk, lmao
Good luck though buddy, and keep us up to date!

also Id just like to add, you've stumbled accross the best Toyota site out there, so if you've got any technical questions on your adventures into upgrades and installs, most definately ask the guys on here; anything I haven't learned from 1st hand experience, I've learned from guys like abe, junkers, thook, space-junk, jay351, and many, MANY others (sorry if I didn't list you
)

ya just from browsing the site the last couple months i have learned loads. besides having an awesome nearly unbreakable truck that will retain its value
knowledge is the number one thing i would like to achieve from this experience

Nice find. I'm new to YOTATECH , so this is my first input.
My baby is a 1992 4x4 22r w/ 189,000miles. Parked right now with a blown head gasket. Going to sink some money and time into it in the spring.
I'm the original owner. that's why it's my baby.

Looks great. I had had a hand me down 96 2wd 4runner the day i turned unfortuently my parents wouldnt let me do anything to it. So now that i was able to save up and buy my 02, I recently started my build. It quite a feeling when you save up enough and put lots of time into it to see how it comes out in the end. my dad was all impressed, the night i got mine done he walked into my room and asked me to look up new suspension for his lexus...

well i got the nerf bars installed last weekend. i ended up having to weld them. i will get pics later cause i forgot to take em
but the big story is i found a weber 32/36 carb on craigslist for 150 bucks. it had less than 300 miles on it
i got it yesterday and i started to take the old one out tonight after work. here it is
Fighting with the connector thing for the electric choke

got some rags in the manifold to keep the riff raff out

and the stocker carby out of its home

(oh and all the hoses and stuff... ya despite my best efforts to find and tag them... they just kind of got ripped out
so it will be guess and check and ask YOTA TECH for help on that one
)
then decided to try to get the new one on tonight but instantly hit a wall
the gaskets dont fit. the holes need to be bigger. so tomorrow i will have to hitch a ride to napa or the stealership to see what they have. if they dont have em i might pick up some gasket material and just make some. if all else fails i can get them from LCE or the Weber site.
more pics and updates to come.
