Mark, on the valve issue... I adjusted them, and haven't had an issue since. I'm coming up on an oil change, and I'll re-check/adjust them then. I'll report my findings.

Otherwise, the 4Runner is running great. I did have an issue with inconsistent idle, which was traced to the auxiliary air control. I bypassed it for now, but will return it to normal when I have time to fix it.

Far as the IACV.... hmmmm... I have a brand new one and I'm still having a couple idle issues. Very rarely my idle will jump up to 1000rpm or so at a stop. I feather the pedal, it comes down, and then right back up... Next light, ...no sign of it, lol. I really think I have something going on withing the Emissions or EFI system... My mileage thing and the hissing on occasion from the Charcoal Can has me suspicious

lol.

 

Yeah, mine does that too, Mark. Puzzling, isn't it? I wonder if the throttle body might be worn. I haven't looked into any issues with my charcoal canister, but I will.

In other news, I ordered some parts from siliconeintakes.com, so I can clean up my AFM swap and start building my air box.

I adjusted the valves tonight, after work. The intake valves were dead on, but the exhaust side tightened up a little. I plan to continue checking the valves at each oil change. Tomorrow, I'll change the oil and check the gap on the plugs. Otherwise, nothing new to report.

 

Anything about the Evap? I'm reading, lately, a couple other threads(on newer vehicles with EVAP Warning Lights, etc.... but still, hahaha)... saying that the bad canisters led to terrible mileage.... which I feel is a category that I fall into/ 13-14city/20hwy ........????

I don't think I mentioned some work I've done in the last couple months. I replaced the unknown brand oxygen sensor, with an NTK sensor. It seems to run better, but it might be a placebo effect. Either way, at least I know it's a good sensor. The LED's I got for the instrument cluster were the wrong bulbs (spots instead of floods), so I'm waiting for some replacements. Hopefully they are better than the first set. I'll update after I get them installed. I also installed a new silicone elbow and some 'T' clamps, from siliconeintakes.com. Some of the parts I ordered aren't going to work with the airbox, so I put them aside for the snorkel build. I need to order a couple more pieces before I can start building the box...



Mark, still haven't done any diag. on the evap. system. I'm going to smoke test it soon, to see if there are any leaks.

Just so you know, I asked the smog guy(he's 65, been there, 30 years! lol),....."Bob, what's with my Evap Can hissing?".... he said, "It's supposed to hiss on occasions... Not all the time, right? That's cuz it's hot sometimes, more pressure, etc., and it's just doing it's job and hissing pressure out the bottom(?).... Besides, Mark.... you passed the evap vacuum test and gas tank and cap test... The CAN is not likely an issue.. In fact, I can't remember one on these ever needing replacement to pass in my shop in 30 years".... lol.

Anyway, I also bring that up because, well, Adam... I FAILED SMOG! Needless to say, I'm sweating it a lil bit since it's tags are up in May... Also because I put HUNDREDS of hours in this thing, combined on different issues, .... I would hate to hear that it's something in the top end or otherwise that has gone wrong. If you check my build thread you'll see a pic of my results.... If you have nothing to add, I understand. Also, ...... if you know anyone, personally, who's a smog tech... Please point them there? (I forgot the names of those who told me they were smog techs, lol... Great, eh? lol).

I got the air tank out, and replaced it with a 4 gallon mounted underneath. I notice a big difference when using the air tools, since I have much less volume. Airing up tires takes about the same amount of time as before, so no issues there. I think I'll mount an auxiliary air tank on my trailer, just in case I need the extra air for repairs at camp...



The couplers are inside the cargo area, for now...



I have a lot more space in the back now. I got an extra 81mm ammo can, and 2 new 50 cal cans (not pictured). These will slide under a platform I'll be building shortly. I also got some Hi-Lift mounts for the roll bar...

At a buddies' house today, hanging out after work, looking at some of his project rigs, and talking about parts. I happen to tell him to keep an eye out for a soft top. He tells me there's one for sale cheap. I call about it, and set up a time to pick it up next week. So, if it doesn't fall through, I'll be getting a black CanBack, with cross bars, in great shape. Smokin' deal too. I can't wait to pick it up! Pics to follow.

PS> Since I'm too lazy to read back....... In case I didn't post this... BigMike(I think it was him) mentioned a guy he knew having TERRIBLE issues with passing smog. He replaced everything and wound up figuring out his charcoal can had failed... it was filling up with fuel(can't remember all the details)... and he replaced it and passed ........AFTER spending 600$ on smog equipment and failing for a second time! lol.

 

Got the top off today, ready to pick up the CanBack this Sunday. I can't wait! I've been looking into weatherproofing for the top, and I found a product called Renovo. Anyone have experience with this? I'd like to take care of the material, to get as much life out of it as possible.

Another project I want to get done in the near future is the hand throttle. I found a control cable online, that I thought would work nicely. I'll have to fab a bracket, and trim the dash to mount the control, but I think it will turn out nice. The hand throttle will mostly be used to idle the engine up, when using the OBA. I wanted something that would be out of the way, and would not be easy to accidentally engage. I plan to utilize this, in conjunction with the cruise control cable, to work the throttle.

The red button must be pushed in, before the knob can be pulled out. The 'lock' will secure the control in any position...

 

thats a good idea on the idle up for OBA. my oba uses the battery and if i was just airing myself up. than i really dont need to idle up but i usually help others air up so the longer run time means i should look into a manual idle up like yours
