Hi all! I'm getting started on this truck that I picked up in south Jersey. It's a 94 with a 22RE, manual, RWD. This is gonna be my little pavement princess. I've got many parts already, just waiting to be upgraded. I'm currently debating on whether to change out the rear diff with one from a mk2 or mk3 Supra, as well as the 5 speed transmission. I've done a cursory look, but not a deep dive into the threads and haven't seen anything to that effect. Has anyone done this in the past? Is it a good idea?
Thanks! I got a clutch and flywheel kit from LCE that's supposed to wind up faster and give it more of a street feel, so I was thinking that having a transmission and diff that have that more desirable final drive ratio over what the truck currently has would be a good route to go.
It's all original stock equipment on the truck now. I didn't want the V6 because it's easier maintenance on the 22RE. Had a truck with a 3VZE in the past. Just changing spark plugs was a PITA, LOL. If I still had that truck, I wouldn't change it, but sadly, it got T-boned in 2016 and was totalled. I just feel like trans and diff from a Supra would give me the feel I'm looking for. Have lots of windy, hilly roads around where I live and I'm looking to shred like a Supra can, just with a bit less HP, but more than stock, LOL.
there are many gearing options for the v6 rear end, including locker options, but it's leaf spring, afaik the old supra/celica had independent coil springs in back(?).
the supra diff will swap into your current 2wd housing pretty easily, they are both 7.5" thirds. Or you could re gear your current diff, and add a limited slip.
