kushiel's 1987 4Runner
Well I picked up this 87 4Runner from Santa Fe, NM. The original owner lived in Eldorado, NM where something happened to the engine. The guy up in Santa Fe redid the engine with a new block, added new tires, and start work on restoring the wiring. The PO also prepped the body for a new paint job.

Rear Window Doesn't Work (Thread is here where RAD4Runner is helping me out)
https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f120...r-fine-270408/
Hole in the Exhaust Somewhere Near Manifold (maybe Manifold?)
Leaking Window Washer Fluid Thingy
Failed Dash Switch for Rear Window
AC Clutch is Dragging and Needs New Belts

SURPRISE!!!
Always fun things you find out after you get the car.
Rear Wheel Wells
In the top picture you can see what looks like an extra panel on the front of the rear wheel well. I opened it up and the whole panel behind it poured out. Big hole on both sides.
Speedometer and/or cable
This morning. I started a thread here:

Where this is going
I am a non trad grad student in geology and chemical biology. I do a lot of field work in rugged and remote locations. I bike pretty much everywhere in town and use my vehicles for outdoors stuff.
Hopefully over the next 6-8 months I'll work on turning this into a nice geoscience 4Runner. My new contact work starting in 2014 is on the Parashant Monument which is why I sold my Outback and picked up this thing.

Work done as of July 2nd
New O2 Sensor
New Air filter
Removed random weird wires
Removed old running boards
Found big (fist size) holes in the rear wheel wells. Cleaned all the crap out of the body and let it dry out.
Schedule an appointment in Monday for the mech to give it a once over and hit list of stuff for me to work on it.

Just going thru your thread. Alot of the links kept taking me to carpet for sale on ebay. Looks like you have a great looking runner to start with. Rad4Runner is an electrical genius and I think you have one of the best helping you on your window. Looking forward to your build.

@Terrys87
It should be a fun project. I am taking it in for an inspection this morning to see what obvious things I missed.
I need to update the build thread with some photos and things that are finished.

UPDATES
New front window
New washer fluid pump and tubing
More cleaning and lubricating various bits and pieces
Still swearing at the rear window
From the mechanic today
Needs new front and rear breaks, repack the 4WD bearings
No holes in the exhaust, noise cause by timing being off by 10 degs and idle out of adjustment, valves need adjustment
Rear springs are saggy
Front and rear shocks need to be replaced
AC clutch is ok, but noisy.
The brakes, shocks, and springs I figured as much so no surprise there. I knew the timing was off.
Looks like once I get it back I will tackle the rear brakes and rear shocks first thing.

Drum Brakes
New brakes in the back!!! I was super dumb and had to take apart the driver side brake assemble 3 times. Bleh. Went with Wagner's and did all new hardware as well.
Tailgate work
Well the cables were shot and so were the latches. I saw another thread on replacing the cables. I need to run out to the parts yard for some 2nd gen cables.
I did remove the latches and cleaned them! I highly recommend removing the latches if you are replacing your cable. I brush mine with a toothbrush a silicon spray. They worked much better.
I'll get some photos of the tailgate stuff tomorrow.
Rear Window Relay
It works but not with the cover on and I have to let it hand upside down.
So what needs to be replaced:
Rear Wiper Position Sensor
Lock Detection Sensor
Top Detection Switch
Replace all four switchy things in the relay
Up next
Rear shocks, going for the Bilstein 4600's based on what folks are saying around here
Tailgate cables
Some light body work
Driver and passenger seat repair/replacement

Nothing photo worthy yet (won't paint it until September)
4WD bearing thingys in the front wheel
New disc brakes
Brake lines bled
Quick spray paint on the areas starting to show rust
FYI - in my tailgate window thread I showed this
In case you need to remove your rear wiper from the whole window relay system. Driver side back corner.

Bilstein 4600 shocks in front. Very lovely.
Repainted all the plastic panelling from the rear seats back. Need some pics. Maybe tomorrow.
Rear window is working now. Makes life much easier.
Replaced a lot of the vac lines. Still more to do.
Up next
Steering crap up front is wobbly so need to get at that
Driver side cable in tailgate is shot
Bilstein 4600 in the rear
Redo the driver and passenger side front
Need to add some soundproofing and thermal insulation

Ojito Wilderness Test Drive
Roads are mixed sand dunes, wash boarded hard pack soil, and sometimes missing in places.
Breakdown of the trip
Highway
Did well. 130 km (round trip) at 65 mph on road. No shaking, but a buzzing noise in 5th gear from the passenger side dash. Most likely the bearing on the counter shaft for the transmission is getting worn???
The road noise is a little loud. I need to fix that. Hopefully next month.
Offroad
50 km (roundtrip) of light offroading and sand. It handled really well. The back is bouncy. Do to bad shocks and the spring pack (part of the suspension) sagging. New rear shocks should help with this and I might do the coil mod.
Other notes
AC works great!
All the new vac lines stayed in place and I didn't shake anything loose!
Driver side seat needs to be rebuilt, badly.

MPG from the Ojito Trip
66% in town, 44% on the highway at 65 mph
21.4 MPG
Running 32 on stock sized tires.
Fixing non glamorous stuff today
-Unthreading bolts and cleaning them up. Then replacing
-Cleaning the underbody
-Repainting a few odds and ends

For the plastic interior panels I went with Dupli-Color Storm Grey. It's a GM replacement color and slightly metallic.
I had most of the panel removed for tracking down the rear window problems so I figured I'd paint them.
Pretty much just wash the panels down and gave them two coats with the rattlecan.
Midday lighting in NM is bad. I think the second pic is a little better.

Thanks! I did grab some from the parts yard on Friday! The tail gate this isn't working right
I tested both cables in the parts yard on a few different tailgates and they worked fine. It looks like the metal bar the connects to the tailgate handle is missing it's plastic pieces on both ends. I think it's not allowing me to pull to the full extension of the cables.

Removed the front wheel well rock, rust, and wasp nest collectors. There were in pretty good shape. I wire brushed and sandy all the places that had some rust and then sprayed down the everything with a silver rust converter.
I cleaned each screw and then WD-40-ed it.
Put both of them back on to collect more dirt, sand, and possible moose.
