kelly1450's 86 4x4 chase truck

I bought a 1986 Toyota 4x4 5 months ago completely stock from a good friend of mine’s aunt in Lake Tahoe. Since then I have logged over 10,000 mile and been doing mild modifications to it to get it ready to serve as a chase truck and some times as Prerunner for mine and my friends racing shenanigans.

Excluding all the maintenance, so far I have Installed:

A set of 2.0 Fox shocks front and back

Swaped rear leaf pack for ford Explorer leaf pack

Swaped out rusted bed for non rusted bed

Put on American Racing Outlaw 2 wheels

And built a front bumper

I plan to:

Put on 30/9.50/15 BFG All Terrains

Swap in Toyota E-locker third member

Install Sway-Away Torsion bars

Build rock sliders

Build mild cage

Build rear bumper

Adventures so far:

Bought in Lake Tahoe drove Vegas and then home in Crestline

Colorado springs CO for Pikes Peak race two weeks after purchase

Moab UT Hells Revenge on way home from pikes peak

Mammoth and Bishop

Pismo dunes

Ocotillo Wells/ Salton Sea

Barstow Poker Run

And many day trips around my local mountains

Pic of rear setup, E-locker with Sky Manufacturing skid plate and 12voltguy.com wiring harness, Ford explorer leaf springs with overload spring taken out, and Fox 2.0, 8.5 inch stroke remote reservoir shocks that bolt right into factory mounts with the proper bushings.

pic of bolt in rear A-arm mount brace I made out of 1"1/4 188 wall chromalloy

pic of Fox 8 way remote reservoir compression adjusters that control compression dampening by limiting the ease of bleed into the reservoir from shaft displacement.

pic of front suspension setup, I played with different front bump stops and found that the combination of front ford ranger bump stop and rear cut and triangulated stock mounts was the most progressive.

also the upper front shock mounts are the infamous F-250 mounts tat are used alot on SAS's all I did is cut off the OE mount and cut down the F250 mount, check for clearance and weld it in.

The goal of this truck is to be a sort of “jack of all off-road trades”. I want to be able to do 95% of everything in the dirt from, deserts, dunes, rocks and mud and snow. The build defiantly has a desert feel because that is what I am most familure with and so I gravitated to those mods first as well as my belief that desert mods like rebuildable/revalvable shocks are overlooked by the greater off-road community, and could yield better performance and more enjoyment in other off-road terrains. My main other goal of this truck is to be as practical and inexpensive as possible since it is my sole and lone daily driver. All the mods, cannot and have not taken this rig out of commission for longer than a 2 day weekend because come Monday I need this Toy to carry me 22 miles and 4,500 feet of elevation change, each way to work and back. Though can afford to buy another daily driver I believe keeping this my sole transportation will help me keep things simple and in perspective.

Latest trails I have done:

Mojave road

Gold Mtn SBNF

White Mtn SBNF

Holcomb Creek SBNF

Deep Creek SBNF

2N17X SBNF

Future mods:

-Warn Winch

-4.70 transfer case gears

-Hyprid internal external cage

- I am thinking about doing a walkthrough cab with rear seats?

I installed the 4.70 T-case gears last week and took the truck out this weekend on John Bull, Holcomb Creek and Deep Creek all in a day! the truck with the 4.7 gears E-locker and 33's was amazing surpassed all my expectations and also those of the people I went with. its amazing how much more a rig can do with the proper modifications that complement one another.

Team work going down the waterfall on deep creek
