helicaldamn's 86 4Runner build(de-teenagering)
First off I want to say hi and thanks for looking at my thread. I picked up this 86 4Runner several months back after my boss(wife) allowed me to get another one(had an 87 previously). I found it fairly close by luckily, but it was a 16yr olds first car. So... you can imagine all the "tweaks" and "mods" he did haunted me every second I was awake.
Here is what it looks like, for now.
Exterior
Interior
It was originally a two seater with the bed extension plate(thankfully he had it). SR5 seats were put in when he got it. The cage is going to be sold and a OEM bar put back in. So as you can see it needs some TLC. He installed a sound system and the wiring was scary to be honest. He couldn't figure out how to wire the head unit to the harness so he direct wired it to the battery with a toggle switch to control its power. The cb was hook up to power by wrapping the power wire around a fuse tab and cramming it back into the slot. The speakers were wired by just wrapping the frayed ends around the tabs. I think you can see how this is going. I've gutted it down far enough so that I can still drive it to work as it is my DD.
Ah a semi-fresh slate to work with.
Its not likely I'll stick with the blue paint since its not original anyway. The guys dad painted it for him and didn't care about being detailed thus driving the OCD side of my personality CRAZY(got my mom to thank for that). They also decided to paint the rear cover on the third silver along with the drive shaft WHY????! That'll be refinished as well.
Hopefully I can get a bit more done soon.

I lucked out that the only rust spots on it are under the battery and a spot about the size of a penny on the bottom of the tail gate.
Gizler00 - The weld quality on the cage is poor at best and it was just a massive paper weight without proper re-welding. I'd prefer an exo over an internal one.
I've got two sets of rear factory plastics I'm just waffling now over whether I want to go stock or with something a little more durable(wood, mdf, or stainless). Any ideas?

Crapple21 - This is the second time I've bought a 4Runner with those exact seat covers. I sense a trend. I had a guy come by yesterday off craigslist and took the cage off my hands for $125 and I got a factory one for $30.
Maybe I'd like the blue better if it was done decent and didn't have runs ALL over the place. It's supposedly a blue from mid 90's toyotas.
Heres an example of something that bugs me about the paint job
I've also started putting peel n seal in the rear side compartments. I was able to find a mostly un-cracked dash the only crack in it is in the dished out top section so I figured I'd do a carbon inlay to cover it up(I know some think it looks bad).
At some point I want to make a complete fiberglass dash. Just need to make a mold and hook it up to the vacuum pump. Attaching the fasteners will be the only challenge. If only re-createing the dash vents was so easy. I've had to get a replacement for the far right passenger. Why'd they put that damn nut right behind the vent. Oh well.
I also needed a new fuel door since the hinge on mine was broken at the top. I found one on ebay for a ok price.
I know like everyone else I'm looking for a replacement rear top seal those are like white whales. Every time I find someone with a parts 4Runner they say they'll go look and will get back with me and it never happens. I'll probably grin ear to ear when I finally find one in good shape.

When I first saw the ad for it I thought I had really lucked out with it having a new paint job and looking great in the picture. Then I saw it in person and hmm I must say I was disappointed. The guys father said he just rushed the job since he knew his son wouldn't take care of it, but why for the love of all things good in this world would you paint over the weatherstripping!!! Especially when they have discontinued the ones he painted over.

Its not the worst bearing I've seen in my life, but it smelled wretched.
