New Toyota in the Family

Hey guys I don't really have any updates on the project truck yet, I've been trying to get all my ducks in a row for the winter. I do have some really awesome non build related news, however. The wife and I decided it was about time I had a newer vehicle to depend on for my daily 100km round trip commute. I've spent the last couple weeks researching and test driving, and finally on Saturday found and purchased this beauty:

It's at a dealer about 2hr drive away so I won't be able to pick it up till next saturday, but I'm unbelievably stoked. It's a 2008 5.7l Tundra doublecab with the TRD package, which basically just means bilstein shocks and fog lights to justify the "go fast" stickers. I'll be going from about 110 tired horses to 381 young and lively ones. This means the project truck can become a dedicated offroader, and I'll probably pawn the '89 4ruster after I'm sure I don't need any parts from it.

Thanks Jason, I've never owned a vehicle that wasn't old enough to legally vote, so this is a huge step for me. It's definitely changed my plans financially, though. I'm going to have to take my time with the '88 build now, and I was originally hoping to have the body/paint work done professionally, which is now out of the question. I do like the fact that I'll be able to drive the '88 fearlessly after it's completion, though, as the Tundra will be my daily driver.

Welcome aboard John, the shop is my Father in Laws. I helped him build it when I was still dating his daughter, and he said at the time everyone who helped had the right to use the shop. I'm sure he's regretting that now, for a while there I had a frame and an engine in the shop, another engine in the granary, the body of one truck hanging in another shed, and a parts truck parked near the back of the property. They've been unbelievably good to me during this whole process.

Check out my thread dutch, my aunt has been good to me letting me use my grandparents old machine shed from the farm that ended up selling most of the land for houses but she inherited from them what was left that included a huge machine shed, I've been in one bay since May to do my upper engine rebuild, it has a cover but front is open and it's not sealed so it's just as cold as the outside, I like the 1/2 round buildings, there cool and let you have a high roof! The spray on foam I bet keeps it toasty in there? :}

I'll be sure to check out your thread. We're able to keep it comfortable in there with just a woodstove in the winter because of that sprayed on foam. We built a waterjacket into the back of a home made steel stove, and pump the water through lines in the floor, keeps the floor above freezing at all time, so he can park his tractor with the snowblower in there, and it melts quick, and keeps the floor dry which is great. I wish I lived a bit closer, because at home I don't have the luxury of even a garage.

Rmp yea I sprayed it using an undercoat gun. I would definitely suggest spraying over rolling. The mixing and masking took time but spraying was really easy. Just be sure to clean out the gun well. This stuff thickens over time

I'm unsure as to why you would remove it and turn it upside down. What you saw in my pics wasn't my truck bed, it's the underside of my truck. I'll be spraying the inside of the truck later, as well. It would be much easier for you to mask off the areas you don't want to spray, and spray down, letting gravity help you. Oh, and just in case you weren't aware, you need to really scuff the surface before you do it. It won't stick well to a glossy smooth painted surface. I think the pro's use big wire bells on grinders. Oh, and I've only done this once, but I did a lot of reading up on products. From what I could tell most people were happier with a two part product that needs to be mixed than the cheaper one part products, but I couldn't compare the two having only done it the one way.

Its not hard to remove the bed, six bolts and when I put the 22R I'll paint the underside of the cab. Still like yours, look great.

Ah, I understand. Best of luck with your build, I'll have to make a point of checking in on it again soon.

yeah sorry I haven't been able to get much progress in on the 4runner. Glad you are still checking in anyway, Terry. Went out to work on it and the father in law had his little sunrunner up on the hoist, so I helped him with it for a while. We're trying to mod it to put tracks on it. I was hard pressed not to help considering how patient he's been with my projects taking up his space. Hoping to get back at the truck next weekend if I have some time free.

Thanks Chef, someday I hope to show a 4runner in my avatar pic that looks even remotely finished as yours. Cheers. As soon as I help the father in law finish his sunrunner project I'll have the shop space back for my 4runner. Fingers crossed.
