Buggy's '89 pickup build!

Hey guys! I'm new here, but not new to builds or forums. I've been into the Mazda rotary cars for a number of years now and have built a few nice projects. I just bought a 1989 extended cab toyota pickup. It was originally a 3.slow 4x4 5 speed, but the previous owner started a 3.4L swap. The new engine is already in and mounted and the exhaust crossover pipe has been taken care of. Other than that though, it's a bit of a dogs breakfast. The good news is the body and chassis seem in decent shape considering most of these trucks up here in Canada are total rot boxes. I'm picking up the truck in 2 weekends from now so I'll post lots of pics then and hopefully start figuring out the mess lol. I'm sure I'll need lots of help along the way so any tips, tricks, and advice you guys have feel free to chime in!

Ya the 3.4 seems pretty bulletproof and I'm really surprised how well they fit in the truck. Tons of room to do all the servicing and work on the engine. I'm told the engine itself has around 75,000 kms on it so should have lots of life in it. I want to go over it though before I fire it up though. Check the timing belt, plugs, etc. Once I get it home I'll have to figure out what it came out of so I can get wiring diagrams rounded up.

I'm picking this truck up in 3 days. Pretty excited to get to work on it. Been doing lots of research and it sounds like it should be pretty simple. Being a licenced automotive tech also helps lol. I think my plan is to just get it up and running for the time being. Once I sell my current daily driver this truck will take over it's duties and then I may start a few mods on it. I'm thinking small lift kit and some 31's or 33's. Not sure if I really need 33" tall tires for what I do so I may stay with 31's. All I'll be doing with the truck is light off roading when going hunting, camping, fishing, etc.

I got a spot cleaned out in my buddy's shop yesterday and started looking closer at the swap. I'm going to have to redo a lot of the stuff the previous owner did. Most of his work is pretty crude and really doesn't hold up to my standards. Oh well, that's the way these things go. I was able to identify the engine and ecu. It's from a 1997 T100. I went and printed off my wiring diagrams at work today and sat down for arts and crafts time tonight glueing the pages together lol. These 2 diagrams will be my bible from now on.

Good luck on picking up from where someone else left off! I know the feeling. When I picked up my truck, the PO had done a crappy alarm system install, I mean, a friggin' mouse nest of wires that ran the battery dead. Crazy, anyhow, from what I can see your truck looks sharp, black is always a great color.

Oh ya, dealing with someone else's failed project is always a challenge. My Mazda Rx-4 was much worse when I bought it. That car was half tore apart and had no engine. I managed to piece it all back together so this should be a breeze. At least the last guy knew to give up at the wiring so just plumbing and mechanical stuff I have to check over. The truck itself is really good for the age and being a Canadian truck. It must have been pretty much top of the line too because it has bucket seats, center console, heated rear window, and a sunroof. I'll get more pictures of the truck when I go work on it next. Just need some warmer weather so I don't freeze.

Ya the funny part was I didn't even notice all that stuff when I bought the truck. I was too busy checking out the body for rust and assessing the work needed to finish the engine swap. I only took note of that stuff when I picked the truck up. It was a nice surprise.

It was fairly mild today so I worked on the truck for a bit tonight. I really didn't get much done. I spent most of my time trying to sort out the mess. I realized I am missing the one connector for the ecu that I need to wire in so I have to make a trip to the scrap yard. I did get my alternator wiring done and got some other wiring sorted in thw engine bay. Here are some more pics of the truck.

I was planning on just running a hood scoop, but after looking at the truck and the clearance for my exhaust and stuff I'm thinking about a body lift. Either a 1 or 2" lift. I don't want it to be rediculous. Can anyone suggest a good kit to buy?

I was going to do the hole in the hood, but the way the last guy had the crossover pipe made puts my exhaust really close to the firewall and my speedometer cable. With a body lift that will give me some more room there so I won't be setting things on fire lol. Thanks for the link I'll check them out.

Yesterday was another decent day so I got a chance to work on the truck for a little bit. I checked the timing belt and properly hooked up the throttle cable. I also sat down and started to label wires on the engine side. My Rx-4 made a good work bench lol.

I am having trouble finding the diagrams I need to sort out the truck side of the wiring. Alldata's wiring harness and connector views are terrible and almost non existant. The previous owner already cut off the factory connectors too which really doesn't help. Does anyone have connector views or even a picture of the ecu and body harness connectors?

So this stupid snow here won't quit! I wanted to go the the junk yard to look for stuff I need yesterday, but we got 5" of snow overnight. Can anyone take a picture of their wiring at the computer and the harnesses behind the passenger kick panel for me?

Well I've been picking away at this project. I ended up ordering the ECU connector that I needed and the wiring pins right from Toyota. That was a fairly expensive purchase considering what you really got, but it all paid off today. I finally got the beast to roar to life! I should have my 2" body lift kit tomorrow as well so hopefully there will be some good progress on this truck soon.

After I had the truck running I noticed a smell of fuel. Sure enough I had a fuel leak back by the tank. I decided that being I'm doing a body lift anyway I just took the bed right off the truck. Good thing I did that. The sending unit was rotten, the wiring for the tail lights has been hacked up, and the box is pretty rotten too. Worse than I had thought. I have a lead on a good rust free southern box I may end up buying. As for the sending unit, the truck came with the tank and sending unit from the donor truck so I'm just swapping that assembly in.

Long time no update. Truck is coming along. Got most if not all of the wiring done, exhaust system on, body lift done. I have an issue with the engine though. It has no power and is setting codes P0100 MAF sensor circuit malfunction and P0505 IAC malfunction. Any ideas on this? I took the IAC motor off the other night and cleaned it. Nothing strange going on there. Also tried cleaning the MAF sensor. Any further ideas?
