So just before Xmas the old '81 22r in my truck crapped out on me on the way to work. I had the original block in my garage for the past 7 years just hanging on the stand so now I had the opportunity to finally use it. These pics are after getting it back from the machine shop. All fresh and clean and bored 30 over, only because they had to because of a score mark in the #1 cylinder.

 

Next step was prepping for paint. Masked off and primed with high temp.

Once the primer set up for a couple days, the color was next. Didn't really want to use a manufacturer color but the teal that I was thinking of before was just a little too bright for what I wanted. So...Ford Blue it is.

 

Of course the valve color had to be done too

 

Once painting was out of the way it was onto assembly. Brand new head casting and valve train. I was going to do an RV cam but I chose to stay with stock. This motor will be a huge step up as it is from the old tired & worn out one that died.

Yay for pistons! So shiny. Struggled a little with the harbor freight compressor i was using but got the job done in about 20 min

Next was dropping the head on and installing new timing kit

 

I love the white/blue/aluminum color scheme. All new timing cover, water and oil pump. Alot of parts will be re-used from the old motor but I chose to get new for certain things

 

As you can see, I cleaned up and painted the power steering set up, distributor and pulleys. I'll see how well this chrome paint holds up once this is up and running. Fan clutch is still good so re-used that

 

I also have a helper named citradelic in my garage, what a coincidence

 

Decided to eliminate some of the emission stuff since I don't have to deal with any testing. Even though I'm sticking with the stock carb there are still a few things I can eliminate without affecting the performance of the carb. EGR was the first to go.

 

Intake in place. Picked up the stud kit from LC to mount this with. Nice and cheap addition for installing and if any removal is needed in the future



Carb in place. Tried to clean it as much as could but it's going to be somewhat hidden any way

The old manifold. Was going to do header but after looking at pricing for a try-y....yeah I'm sticking with stock for now which is already a good setup. Header may be a future investment



Took those wire brush wheels to it. Didn't shine up as much as I thought but good enough.


And there it is after paint. Used that high temp BBQ stuff. Good for 1200 degrees. Also you can see the air injection block off plates too. That cleaned up a little space. Plus it gets rid of that reed valve and resonator on the intake side

 

And that's how she sits now. Picked up the blue silicon vacuum lines from Summit. With eliminating that steel vacuum line setup that sits along side the intake it was a little challenging making sure that whatever system I'd be keeping is hooked up correctly still. Couple of t-fittings solved that though.

Saturday I should be pulling the old motor out, which has been stripped down to just the block and head now. I need just a few things off of it to put onto to this one and then get her dropped in. More pics to come as that takes place.

So far, for right now, plan is getting the truck up and running again. It's my daily driver so I've been missing it. Next will probably be new rear springs, followed by tires and then new exhaust. Front end needs some work too in the suspension & alignment. I could go on and on, lol, but those are probably the necessities so far.
