Boman's 88 4runner Build Up
Hello Yotatech! Ive been visiting the site for about a year but finally just made an account after ending my quest for the yota for me. I was originally looking for a pickup but by chance found a 88 4runner that had just been in Michigan for a few years and lived in Arizona before that.
Im mooching off the neighbors wifi right now and only get a signal if I hold the computer up to the window haha. I should have internet here tomorrow so Ill be back and try to figure out how to throw some pictures up tomorrow.
Peace

Here she is the day I got her. 322k on the clock. Drove her home 50 miles on three cylinders and no brakes =P

Other than under where a leaky battery sat for a little while, these are the only spots of rust there are.

More updates to come soon!

Well sorry for the delay, but here is an update on the 4runner.
When I bought her I knew she was only running on three cylinders, I didnt know why though. All the wires looked super old so I was hoping it would be as easy as just new plugs wires distributor cap and rotor. It wasnt. Finally did a compression check. From front to back it went from 160 to 100 to 90 to ZERO!! After 322k miles I guess a new motor isnt the craziest thing in the world.

So looking through the junk yard I found a couple 22re motors. The best one I found came out of an 85 toyota camper. Only had 92k on the clock.

Took two days of work between my buddy and I to finally get it out. The first day was nice, about 50 degrees and sunny. The next day not so much. It rained during the night making it really muddy and cold. It started snowing about the last hour we were there.
Pulling the actual engine out didn't go a smoothly as I had hoped but we did get it done. The rear engine lift point snapped off so we had to wrap the chain around the exhaust manifold. And no matter who hard we tried the tranny would just not let go. ended up pulling the tranny out with it even though all the bolts were out.

after picking up the end of the tranny when the engine was up in the air like that and smacking it against the ground a few times it finally let go.
After a few cold and muddy hours and 150 bucks I had my engine

Alright so I have been a little lazy about updating this. At least I havn't been as lazy working on my 4runner. So here goes to catching up.
Engine removal:
Clear on both sides and labeled all the vacuum lines and everything to be able to put everything back right.

Rented the engine hoist and bought a load leveler from harbor freight.

put a jack under the tranny and remove crossmember

Unbolt engine mounts and up she comes with the slow process of giving the engine hoist a few pumps then cranking the load reveler and repeat. I would surprised that pretty much all they weight of the engine and tranny is supported by the rear engine lift point.

To clear the grill I had to put down the garage door as far as i could and had just enough room to raise the hoist.

And she's finally free.
