Another 86 SAS

Been parts collecting for a few years and after wheeling with a bracket lift it’s time to chuck that uselessness in the garbage where it belongs and SAS it. I can’t follow my buds without getting body damage or near flopping because the center of gravity (and driving poorly lol) also deciding to do this now because I blew a 3rd head gasket and it’s gonna be down anyway.

What I’ve got so far:
6 shooter knuckles and hi steer
knuckle shims and hardware
front axle from an 83
low range Chevy 63 kit and a lot of 63s
i have a few pairs of rears for the front
4.88 Detroit locked for rear
4.88 spartan locked for front
Tacoma rotors
TG spring hanger kit
TG Shock hoop kit
Marlin crawler knuckle gussets
miscellaneous crap I’m forgetting

Chevy 63s and stretching the wheelbase

Since I’m putting rears up front and that pushes the front forward a few inches I thought it would be good to push the rear a little further back

Been a while but I started cutting crap off

Front axle with marlin crawler knuckle gussets, trail gear full face and trail gear upper gusset.

God awful trailmaster lift getting taken off.

Time to bust out the plasma

Time to bust out the grinder

Mocking up springs

I’m building a ruf pack with stock rears and a bunch of miscellaneous Toyota rear packs. So far everything looks gravy. Plan on finishing the packs this weekend, a frame brace up front, and then sliding the axle under. I’ll do the steering box forward after the axles under to see where I need to be.

Not much since it’s cold and dark after work

Started getting the 6 shooters ready and assembled I’m gonna throw it all on together using the camel method which isn’t the best but I like it.

Well she’s almost done. I made it too low I think. Shock hoops in the front are gonna be a bitch and I need to put bumps on. Also I need some stiffer springs all around they’re a little too clapped out and it gets some shimmy’s down the road. Could be due to no front shocks could be springs could be both. But I love it so far. Feels great to have a decently driveable truck again.

Things I still need to do. Safer on Road

The truck likes to do some side to side shimmy on the highway at around 60. the steering also isn't as tight as I would like. The leaf springs on all corners are suuuuuper soft and probably has something to do with it. Also we made the truck sit way too low, it has about 3" taller than a stock IFS runner on 31's. I love how it looks but I need to lift it some f+r so i can fit the shock hoops up front and have some decent length shocks on it, I'll eventually go either 37 or 40's to keep that tire to body difference I went low because the bracket lift rode so bad with a high cg and no articulation. The shimmy most likely also has to do with not having front shocks on right now but like I said the springs are also dumb soft. I wonder if any of the other low sas trucks have had the same driveability issues I'm having. I'm going to add a stiffer leaf to all 4 and probably an overload as well and then throw shocks on and I'm assuming it will help. I also noticed a hell of a difference in turning radius with a +6 front axle it seems like i have to turn the wheel a ton as well on the road. interested to see what other people that have SAS'd have to say. Still I love the way its turning out, better than I could have imagined when I bought the pile and thought 31's were the coolest thing on the road.
