HI all, I am new to the site but have been surfing around for awhile. I purchased my 94 toyota a few months ago but havent done anything to it yet.

Already on:

· 3” body lift

· 33” BFGs

· Air tank rear bumper

Near future Plans: possibly this month

· Detroit lockers rear/ trutrack front (possiblyarb air)

· 5.29 gears

· 4” RC suspension lift

· 36/37 military tires

· Tube front bumper and winch

I am having a grinding like noise when i get up to about 30/40 mph in 3rd through 5th, i took it to myy local shop and at first they said they thought it was my trans but the mechanic got in it and drove it around and said it couldnt be that since its making the noise in 3rd-5th, so they figured it must be the rear chunk and that the gears arent meshing right... Does anyone know what this might be?

 

Its the forks in the transmission I bet. It's a little hard to explain but like these forks that push the slider gears into place to engage the gear. So there's a fork that's "U" shaped for every gear and that can wear and create noise and eventually stop working which would make you lose that gear or multiple gears and this is pretty common in Toyota's. If not that, possibly a bad bearing or gear rod and or the throw out bearing may be going out. If it was my rig I would drain the transmission fluid look for any shavings, and replace the fluid and also add transmission additives such as "stop slip" or etc. but keep this in mind if you add any additives to the transmission fluid it may cover up the "grinding noise" but it will more than likely not fix anything.

Only thing not up to date on that picture is I added wheel spacers, got a body lift, and some cb equipment I get to come home to when I get done working out in SC this week though

the shop went ahead and changed the trans fluid for my and checked the dope in the rear axle and there was literally non so they added some.
