Hmmmm, I'm still having neuron firing issues with exactly how that works... with the tabbed spring in over the splined section and larger spring over the top and then up into the dial... HOW THE HELL does the dial turn it the other way? Meh... I'll figure it out and laugh at myself, LATER.... for now, trying to find time to piece it back together.
I picked up new O-rings and cover gaskets, 93... I strongly suggest you do so(from what I've read and how I see things on mine..... My o-ring LOOKED fine... until I bent it back the other way a lil, with the ID of the o-ring hyperextended.... It has TONS of dry rotting cracks in it. I mean, makes sense, it CAN get hot and it doesn't exactly bathe in grease, ya know? Just thought I'd throw that up there... Cuz if you don't, and they let crap in... then you're starting all over.
PS> I'M SORRY, 93, if you already said you got those two dealer items! .... told u I had a neuron firing issue today! hahaha.

No, I haven't gotten any gaskets or o-rings yet. The ones that were in them are a bit dry rotted. I went on WabFab a couple days ago and their gaskets and o-rings were $12 a for a set of 2. I did a mock purchase and it turned out to be $44.62 after adding the 15% off "GARRETT" promo code. After the chest pains subsided, I thought I could just make my own gaskets with gasket material and maybe go to a dealer for the O-rings. I know that sounds like cutting corners, but I can get gasket material from work for $1.25. I could always make the gaskets and possibly put on some RTV for extra insurance.
Does every Toyota have parts or is it just certain ones? We don't have any O-rings like that at Ace, so WabFab and the dealer seem to be the only options. Wabbit, if you just so happen to be reading this, sorry

I went through space-junk's write up again and I came across something that made me cringe...the gold bolt. This might be a stupid question, but do they often break when being removed or re-torqued? If so, could I just replace it with a regular Grade 10.9 or 12.9 bolt? I only ask because they are only supposed to be torqued to 11 lb-ft. It makes me think they are fragile or something.
If it's a stupid question, don't mind my idiocy
EDIT: Or does he call it the "gold bolt" because it's hardened?

Did you check my thread lately? Posted the part numbers, etc. 24$ WITH tax at the dealer. Just bring a print out with you from an online Toy parts source like www.toyotapartszone.com and ask the dealer if they'll at least TRY to match it a bit. Say, "I know there is shipping, but it's still a bit cheaper.... Could you match this?" Also, you could print out a copy of the pic I posted of my actual receipt?
I don't like that 0-ring from anything but Aisin/Toy... It's unique, as you can tell. The gasket? up to you.... They seems unique in material as well.... but I could be wrong... they could be nothing SUPER special.... Just seems that MANY of "GURU" status tell me "OEM gaskets are the way to go... especially for fitment."...
Take care, man...

Thanks Chef! On Toyota Parts Zone, I can get the O-rings for $2.95 each, with like $12 shipping. I'll try a Toyota dealer first before I order.
I came home and it looked like my dad sand blasted the dials and outer ring. Awesome! So I painted the black and red and whatnot.
I also bought some bolts at work for my tow hook in the front and painted the heads red. I have a second one for the drivers side coming in the mail soon. Then I can paint it red and put them both on. My next day off is Wednesday, so there will not be much progress until then.

My guess is; Cheaper, faster to walk in. Dealer prices vary GREATLY, I was surprised how much, actually.... Riverside, CA is probably cheaper in parts than Torrance, CA(property tax, etc., ya know?) ... Anyway, it's OFTEN Not as cheap as online, .... but sometimes shipping KILLS it! 12$ Shipping for even a 1$ PRICE negates the whole purpose, ya know? BALL JOINTS? WHOLE other story! haha.
If you have a dealer near by... HONESTLY, 'walk in'... talk to them a bit and ask if you can get the online price, or close... (They'll usually give you an account if you make it clear you're coming in there a lot from now on, ya know? Had mine for years and have saved HUNDREDS on TPS, IACV, etc.).... Yeah... walking in is better than phone.... that's how you make relationships, right? lol... Hmm, ...maybe you have someone that works at one? I can't remember... But you'll leave there with all 4 items for 24$, KWIMean? If it's 20$ for all 4 shipped? SURE! 4$ is 4$, PERIOD! lol.
Stay cool!!!!

Today I had my first experience in dealing with the stealerships and needless to say, I'm not happy. I requested the part my local Toyota dealers website and told them to send a quote. They quoted me $7.97. I responded back "If that's the price for both of them, go ahead and order them and call me when they come in". Jump ahead two days...today I go into the parts and service place and the guy charges me $16.79. I'm just like "you got to be kidding me". He then proceeds to get all up in arms saying stuff like "well I can show you the email if you like. I know what I told you" and "well you can take it or leave it" and all this other crap. So I just paid the $16.79 and left. I didn't feel like wasting my time arguing with him. And of course, I forgot to bring the print-out of the price quote from toyotapartszone, but I doubt they would have matched that price anyway. They're just jerks who pride themselves on providing poor customer service and overcharging people. So yeah...I won't be going back.
However, I got the parts I need, and the only thing I need to do now is put a clear coat over the dial and the outer ring and then put them on. That should be Friday.

Damn bro sorry to hear you had a bad experience at the dealership. Personally i've have had good experiences in the past, but i definitely gotta agree with you on the overcharging. its ridiculous. But, unfortunately, sometimes thats the only place that carries the parts you need.
I was lucky. The guy that always tended to me had been working for toyota for something like 25 years and loved my truck and the idea that i was putting so much effort into restoring and fixing it up for offroad. According to the guy he was a big fan of 1st gen 4runners and when he asked what my plans for the truck were he got all into it; So much that from that day forward he always gave me his employee discount lol I always thanked him and he always replied "no problem man, so long as you bring your truck over here when its all finished and fixed up so i can see it then its cool." Said he knows how expensive it can be restoring these trucks so he wanted to help me out.
But i do have to admit the guy he worked with was kinda rude and had no patience what so ever. He'd start getting really nervous when he would see a line of 3 people and then get an attitude when people would take long or he couldnt find the parts customers were talking about. lol

Yeah, I've heard bad things about that dealer before and dealers in general, so believing that I could just waltz in and out, getting exactly what I wanted at a great price without hassle was just crazy
I'll save the dealer as the absolute last resort. If I can get it online or make it, even if it costs more, I'll do that before I'll go back to the dealer.

Never had anything but good experiences at my local Dealers, "Torrance Toyota and DCH Toyota(one and of the same now, as one bought the other out)" ........ Mikey, the guy in there, has been there 20 YEARS! HE WILL find you the part, if it's even available, and HE WILL look as far forward in the database to make sure you're getting the 'most prorated' version... He WILL give you a 20% off Code that works every time(an account number like a auto shop would have) IF YOUR COOL TO HIM and show respect... But he has his moments... Think of how many times a day he hears, "WTH, DUDE? HOW MUCH? AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH", lol.... But that guy you mentioned? NIGHT AND DAY, and definitely not the norm. In Ridgecrest, CA, middle of nowhere in a sense, I went in to the dealer there on a HURRY thing(valve cover gasket).... It was 3pm, but he STILL, KNOWING I WAS IN A PINCH, called and ragged the guy enough in California City(??) to bring it over RIGHT AWAY! .... he did, and he ALSO gave me the 20% off price.....
I noticed my dealer, as I said, is more than others in this county... But it's 2 BLOCKS AWAY, MAN! lol... Honestly, I'm not wasting 10$ in gas and stress to save 5$, ya know? Now with Distributor or something 500$.... SURE, of course i would to save 40$! hehehe.
Sorry for ya too, man... And hey, it's not a Chevy.... so you knew you wouldn't get stuff like this for 58C like you would with the Chevy Hubs, hahaha. JK
NOTHING wrong with Chebby's...
But really... look at the difference in Rack and Pinion for a newer Toy and a newer Chevy...
lol.........
Take care, man.... best wishes... I'm ticked, I should be done with those 3 times... But I've been stuck on my gremlin and, well, LIFE DRAMA! haha.
Havea good one

Well, I feel very lucky. I sprayed PB Blaster on the nuts and cone washers, waited a while (went to eat dinner and whatnot), and then started disassembling. The cone washers all came off with 3 or less taps of the hammer to each stud
I was amazed! That was the one part I was dreading...
So I cleaned up all the nuts and washers on a wire wheel and gave them a coat or two of paint. That's about it for tonight
Final assembly tomorrow...finally

Nice, .... good to see you were able to get those darn things off no drama! I know others aren't so lucky! They came FLYING off for me, too.... (into the nuts, plum with the stud heads, hehehe.. YEP, I read that tip before I started removing my Auto Locking Hubs, too
).......
Mine are ready, but I'ma do a video of assembly/install, so I have to wait, logically, til I have the CV's repaired and ready for install
Best wishes on the rest.... Take pics, k?

Here's a short version of install. I mainly went by the FSM and space-junk's thread, so if you want the detailed version, see those
All apart

Clean up surface and put gasket on

Grease and install hub body (image lost somewhere). Install cone washers, flat washers and nuts. Torque to 23 ft/lbs. I put a bit of anti-seize lube on the cone washers so they are easy to get off if need be.
Grease clutch and dial. Install clutch, spring, and dial together. Making sure dial is in "FREE", insert into hub body

Insert and tighten bolts to 7 ft/lbs. space-junk's thread said to tighten to 11 ft/lbs, but the FSM said 7. I went with 7.

More later...
