I can go up to a max of 15k CDN. Perhaps just a tad more if it gets it all done exactly how I want it.

I hope this is a realistic budget.

We are usually looking at about 8K US for an engine swap. So I would say as long as your close to that you should be good.

With adding up all the parts you need, I would suspect that your are going to use all of that budget for all your parts installed, but it should be doable.

I know good work is not quick or cheap. However, any corners I can cut in cost is ideal. I'm amazing at hustling deals for some reason. I don't mind throwing out a cheeky low ball, it's amazing how often people settle. It also gives you their lowest sale cost as a counter. I like haggling a lot. It's fun.

What model car is the best option? I should start looking now for a cheap one or newly written off.

I'm with you on haggling. I enjoy it as well, and yes I have gotten some amazing deals too. That's the fun.

The best year is the 93-94 for a couple of reasons.

1. Last year of the bigger connecting rods.
2. Last years of OBD1 engine management systems.
3. No immobilizer to deal with

Any 93-94 Lexus with a 1UZ? Some have a better option on the oil pan is that right?

How would a person get the cost of a 1UZ swap down if you where to do it as an example? Who makes the best wiring harness? Will I be able to mod in air conditioning?

Sorry to be long winded, but here we go.....

SC400- has the correct oil pan system needed for a SAS, the down side is the hydraulic fan system they use. You will need to source a non hydraulic pulley from either and LS400 or from a Tundra 2uz motor, it will fit. The power steering pump has a separately mounted reservoir. SC400 also has bigger injectors so it has slightly more HP.

LS400- correct pulley assembly so no issues not running the fan and going electric fan. All in one power steering unit so no need to mount a power steering reservoir. The oil pan is going to be the issue. It fits with IFS, but won't fit with a SAS, so you will either need the pan, lower motor sump assembly, and dip stick off of an SC400 or off a 2uz powered Landcruiser. Both of those are rear sump design.

I went with the LS400 when I did my swap. One reason was I was running IFS so it fit correctly, secondly it was cheaper then the SC version.

I have the bottom half off an SC400 sitting on the shelf waiting to go on my LS motor for the SAS. Yes they are all interchangeable. I can also go to the bigger injectors from the SC motor or even a set of Supra injectors if desired.

The nice thing is that there are a lot of parts that are all interchangeable.

If it was me I would stick with the LS motor as your more likely to get the best deal on it over the SC car.

If you have more questions feel free to ask.


The easiest way to cut cost is to create all the things you need by your self. Patience is your friend.

Fabbing up a set of motor mounts can be done, i.e that's what I did. It took a lot of trial and error and rebuilding mounts several times even after I thought they were perfect the first 2 times they weren't. I had about 10 revisions before I got the final product. I sell motor mounts for $179. Material will cost you less then $50. So you could save about $130 there.

The second thing to save some money on is the radiator. It will take some trial and error with measuring, but finding a fab shop that can weld aluminum and work on radiators is a good place to start. Get quotes from them and ask to see there work. You want a reputable shop. They will need to buy the radiator and you need to supply them the correct placement for the necks, mounting plates, ect. We sell the radiators for $850. Most shops will charge about 3-400 for the universal radiator and then about another 2-300 in labor to make the necessary adjustments to fit your application. This can save you about $1-300 depending on how many times you need to make adjustments.

Air-condition is going to be the hardest thing to fit. The A/C pump needed is from the SC model of engine as the housing is the smallest and it will be tight to say the least. You will need custom built high and low pressure lines made. The next hurdle is mounting the condenser as you will be blocking a large portion of your radiator for that. I haven't installed my A/C system yet, but working on it.

We sell a correct flywheel for this application as well. Not really anyway to save you money there.

The bell housing we sell is not going to be any cheaper then anybody else, and you can't really fab that up your self either. If you so inclined and have access to the tooling needed, you could buy the template on line to cut out an adaptor and mate up your bell housing and such. I find that most people who have attempted this have had issues with getting it to fit correctly or have concerns about how much material you have to remove to get the bolts to all fit.

As for wiring, this is where you can save your self the most money. It is not over difficult and looking back now, if I had to do it over again I would wire it up my self.

All of these money saving idea's are just costing you time mostly. Buying a product is saving your self headaches and frustrations that others have endured usually. I find that while this is becoming a more common place swap, anytime you work on a project like this even with purchasing parts you will run into hang ups and have to come up with solutions to correct them to get it to work correctly.

That's a lot to consider.

A 3.4 might be a better idea for now then do the swap I really want when I have a garage to do it myself.

It is a lot to consider, but do it once and right and be done with it. If you are gonna do a 3.4 just save the money and get the 1UZ you won't regret it.

At a glance it would have been the front tires sticking out 5.5"s and the rear 2.5". Had he dug deeper he would have found lots of interesting stuff other than the rust holes such as, elbow's used in brake lines when I ripped out the anti lock brake actuator on the frame passenger side wheel well. He would have noticed that I have no sway bars, parking brake and my day time running lights decided I don't need them working anymore. Front tires are bald from the IFS not holding an alignment past a wheeling session. They are actually leaning out visibly from the toe in scooping the tread funny. I can poke my finger through my front fender rust holes. My front turn indicators are zip tied to my bumper.


Things I got away with in the arctic don't fly down here in BC.


Tim is a cool guy as well. I have a great fabricator I was going to use locally but he has lost passion in off-roading. Tim still wheels so it really helped sway the decision. Also the fact that I had a ball hanging out the last time he did some work made me want to go back.

I think I've hammered out some choices.

I'll stick with a 3.4 swap. It's tried and tested and a lot cheaper than a 1UZ swap. Besides, the engine I really want to cram in is a 2UZ. When I know enough and funds allow I'll give it a go.

In the mean time that compromise opens up more options in a bullet proof driveline.

I will get a full float rear with disk brakes with a 9.5 FJ62 diff. I can get new knuckles and longfields for the front axle straight away instead of waiting for trail breakage.

The knuckles are the same as the mini truck ones. Who makes the best? Now I know I can get that exo done and clean up the body within my budget.

Now I need to learn about 3.4 engine choices. I know a lot more about which 1UZ model car to go after than I do the 3.4. I had always brushed this engine off as too old but considering how easy it's supposed to be and how it will keep me on budget I think it's a goer.


Before all that though, I should start uploading again to get the rest of the trip photos up.

I think the 3.4 would be a wise choice, especially if you decided to do it yourself - plus then you can just keep your 5speed without any extra hassle. If I remember correctly, there isn't any easy way to trick the 1uz ecu into playing nicely with a manual tranny...

Anyhow the 3.4 came in the following models:

96-2002 4Runner
95.5-2004 Tacoma
95.5-98 T-100
2000-2004 Tundra

Looking forward to see what you do with it! Motor swap, SAS, dual cases... you're building my dream rig!

So I left off last heading South to Northern California where I joined the New 49ers. They have a bunch of claims so I could do a bit of panning and camping on their property.

It was awesome. We had a quiet spot all to ourselves and stayed there a couple of days.

You'll get there buddy! I'm 34 so have a working life head start. The nice thing about all this is wheeling with new heeps. I will have spent under 20k for a spectacular wheeler. What does a late model heep cost up front?

Oh and barbie has a jeep so..... A little friendly rivalry is fun. I don't hate jeeps of course. I just wouldn't own one and if I ever win one I'd trade it for a Landcruiser.

No its a Poulan but that's owned by Husqvarna and so is Mcollaugh. They all come from the same factory/share designs etc.

I've got so many more photos to go. So far these are only picked from the first 16GB memory card. I've 4 more of those to go.
