90 Toy EXD CAB Diesel Build

Hey Guys!

Ever since I was a kid I loved the yota's since my pops 87 pick up and his 94 runner. Recently picked up two rigs of my own. a 1990 extended cab and a 94 single. I'm located in the northeast (Maine). I picked up this extended for 400$ not running. It was in rough shape but I have big plans. I'm doing a full restoration. I'm making new rockers, I've welded my frame up, sanded and painted with herculiner. All new polyarmour lines,OM617. A 2 inch body lift from 4crawler and a recent 85 SFA as well as my chevy 63's and 80's rears for the front. I've got a few pictures of my ride stock none of my work thus far. Right now I'm down to bare frame welding and painting. My goal is parts collect and build at once. I know I would have to shorten my rear driveshaft about 6.5 inches and get a new tranny brace. but the extended cab has a longer driveshaft than a single. I have to do to adjust to this mod concerning this driveshaft issue. Its going to be a on/offroad rig.

Ha putting that 400k Machine to work!

1985 Axle

Ha I think I put the 400k machine to good use...I'm sanding the frame and welding it shut not 100% but still, I'm doing thick coats of herculiner to help combat that salt in winter.

My Overall project consist of this list

Restoring what I can
85 axle and rebuild
Sky Truss
80 rears with 90 5th and 6th in the front with TG hanger kit
TG Shock hoops
Bilstein 5100 all around
Homemade flip kit (front and rear)
Rear Shock mod the /\ setup
High-steer
Chevy 63's in the rear with low pro hangers stock rear hander with 5-6 inch shackles.
Dual cases (2.28x4.70) 1980 T-Case
4.37 Diffs (rear welded/spartan upfront)
MC Bumpers
TG Rock Sliders
OM617 Mercedes Turbo Diesel
TG Rock Sliders
Bobbed bed
33-35 inch tires
Warn VR10000

So I have some minor progress going on of collecting items such as

The doner tranny from the yard below, I mostly got it for the gear driven transfer case and to mate it to the OM617.

Chevy 63'' Springs (ignore the mess in my bed, I got it like that when I was given the truck)

I know I've been gone for a long time. However, I've been up to some good . I've got some goodies up my sleeve, I picked up a 1980 pick up with the broken frame. I'm using the T case from that, I'm going to use the w56 Transmission.
SO THIS IS THE BEAST! 1985 Mercedes 300SD

A motor shot

And a video

http://youtu.be/BOUDPlBtfQI The motor was warmed up before beating.

The deal is that I'm selling the V6 and tranny for like 250 (130k). I found this about an hour north of my home. I saw it on craigslist for 700. My buddy works at the junkyard and we have access to the wrecker. we got to the guys house checked it all out and I paid the 700. However, my good friend saw a old dodge camper in the woods. We offered 500 for the camper. Hauled it to the yard and scaled the camper. It brought in 1000 bucks, we made 500 profit. So I'm taking the motor and junking the mercedes body (400$ in scrap). All in all I got a free turbo diesel motor what a deal
So my brother and father manage a steel shop in Kansas City and have all the machinery to laser my adapter plate, spacer, and my pilot bearing adapter. So I'm staring at a free 1980 T case (duals), 4.37 gears, 80 rears up front, Chevy 63 in the rears, and a totally mechanical diesel (1985) for virtually NADA.

This is the 1980 doner that I got from a friend, tonight we took out the Transfer case, the front and rear axles, and kept the drive shaft. I'll post up pics later of the parts

sweet. looking forward to seeing that diesel in your truck.

for the frame issues - shouldn't you be using something like POR15 on there to take care of the rust issues instead of just Herculiner?

Thanks for the positives guys! I'm working as fast as I can to get as much as i can before old man winter gets here. I'm going to order my hanger kit from TG soon. As well as the rear hanging kit from sky. However, I'm going to take my time cleaning the axles up and rebuilding them. The worst case is that once warm weather hits Maine again I might have all my stuff ready to do the front and rear axles. I have to clean do seals and paint them. So hopefully before winter I could get my SAS done. Spend the winter cleaning up the diesel.

Its not a promise, but once mine adapters are legit and kinks worked out, I'm sure my brother wouldn't have a problem pushing a couple out for maybe like 200-300 bucks /quote]

So this is the motor shot, this is before the long struggle of getting this pita out. I started at 3 or so with a small break in between. I the the motor out at 10:30. The small stuff around the motor wasn't an issue, it was the motor mounts that turned out to be the largest problem, the bolts were wicked seized the allen heads were chowdering out so the sawzall sliced the f'ers in half. I pulled the block out on a whim today because I got out of work really early. I forgot about the torque converter bolts (never owned an automatic and never will own the junk) so its natural i guess to miss them. So I used the skidsteer to pull the converter off the transmission which wasn't hard at all. So now for a few pictures...not to mention doing it all in the dark. Needless to stay the best part of the night was throwing all the v6 junk in the mercedes for scrap weight!

All in all I'm glad thats over with, I'm going to start cleaning it up and painting it soon. Stay tuned.

Here's a list of this winter's basement projects!
Axle rebuild
Clean w56 and paint
Install 4.70 in 80 t-case
Mate T-case to w56
Laser and Lathe om617 adapter kit
Prep chevy 63's and toy rear 80's
