8T8 4RUNNER's 1988 4Runner Build-Up Thread
#1781
Hello Mark..I have pulled the interiors out of these so many times, I think I could do it blind folded anymore. Getting ready to pull mine out again. I can get the steps that I do if you would like. It isnt bad but does take patience. Probably around 30 minutes. That Relay box is expensive and I have listed on #185 of the 88s were someone used relays from Radio Shack, I havent tried it and I have a spare bad relay box I have been wanting to fix and test. It is on the list to do someday. Around here I believe the boneyard wants $40 for it and heard Toyota wants a fortune for it.
Also my keys are so worn out that they wont even turn the locks on the tailgate and that is the only way I have to get in. It would be nice to just open with the key but I just am so used to dropping the window before getting back there it is second nature.
Hello Jerry..You hearing the clicking means it is working, that is the first thing I check for when working on a bad gate. That is where the ground wire trick fixes that window problem on that. I am not sure what is the hold up at that point. But will offer the following suggestions.
If you are hearing the click, try checking the pointed hold down bolt in the area by the roll bar and the factory rear speaker on drivers side. There is a safety switch there and that bolt pushes down and completes the circuit. Might try just tightening that bolt a little tighter, I believe it is a 12mm bolt.
The other suggestion is make sure your rear window wiper is all the way up and lean against the tailgate or make sure it is completely shut. It doesnt take much to trip another saftey feature.

no wiper.....bwahaha...seriously. it's gone. no wiring to it either.....in other words the cap goes on and off without anything other than unbolting it.
it's no biggie....but now I know you guys are the ones and post #185 is where I start. I do recall reading all kinds of threads and seeing about Radio Shack relays and un-soldering and re-soldering.

Yeah, and I wouldn't go for a Yard Unit... You know how many times i've read, "My rear window wont roll down, HELP!" ....with a bad relay box being the culprit? LOTS! lol. I recently picked up a nice looking window switch for the passenger side(over there, they can roll it down, but not up.... Sticky some times from the driver side too, but both ways works most often).. So I picked one up, put it in..... 'SMOKE!' lol. It not only didn't work, it was smoking. So I put the old one back in with some dielectric grease and cleaned up the male end.... Works good enough to not deal with smoke! lol.

YO....
well..was a beautiful day. Hopefully Brandon took his sunscreen with him. did not go down there....I imagine it's a long hot day ...currently 74 degrees and sunny.
Joe and I were up bright and early today to do some "training".
he's aware of a lot of my previous life and is choosing his own path as well...I don't encourage him, but I support him with being a fire dude. with that said, we met up with a few other guys at the hall (mind you, this is a VERY rural area. the entire Fire Dept may consist of 15 guys..not certain). the main ENGINE was away for an electrical issue last September, when it became victim to the massive flooding we had (it was many many miles away at a shop) and took on about 5 feet of water which turned a moderate repair into a MAJOR repair. they just got it back last week.
anyways...I'm familiar with the whole firefighting, rescue, ems thing as it was something I did for a very long time but it took a backburner when Joe was born and totally hung it up 7 years ago when we moved.
currently I have committed myself to getting back into it.
well....BLAH BLAH BLAH. had a good time today.
Joe got to work the hose..

the old man learned how to work the pump. actually I like this pic because we are both in it.

Good to see you two working together. That is some great scenery in the background. I am glad to see Spring and Summer.
I didnt think with the plug and wiring unhooked an removed that the window would even go down. Wonder if they some how jumpered the plug in the left rear access panel by the washer fluid bottle.

Now THAT is something I want to do, Terry, "Wire in near the rear window washer fluid bottle connection", accompanied by my 'extra rear window' switch I got at the yard, HIDDEN, so while camping/in spring as well as winter... I CAN GET OUT W/OUT CRAWLING UP FRONT! lol. (some of them mornings feel a lil more urgent on the 'GOTTA GET OUT, QUICK' realm, eh?
hahaha.
hahaha.
