Picked up this 87 dlx a couple months ago, figured I'd start a thread to help keep track of my repairs and maybe help out someone who runs into the same problems, I'm not the most technical person out there but I grew up playing with Legos so I have that going for me

So it's a 1987 dlx 22re with a w56 with 160k on the ticker. The head was replaced along with timing chain around 120k, and the transmission was also rebuilt around the same time.

This is my daily driver. Plans for the future include replacing all the rear suspension components (it doesn't look like it sags because the PO has done the zuk mod) and overall increasing it's drivability and keeping it IFS for now

This was when i first picked it up

 

The first things I did when I got it was track down a massive oil leak I did not see when I was looking at it because the PO had placed a piece of cardboard on the skid plate effectively catching all of the oil leaks. It turned out to be a front main seal. I tore it all apart and replaced the front main seal, put in a new exhaust manifold because the old one had a couple cracks that had some sort of sealant on, all new belts, plugs, and a fresh oil change.

 

I then enjoyed replacing a broken fan clutch, a fan blade that was in the process of self destruction, and also the water pump just in case. I now have a cat back exhaust in the mail I'm waiting on, so that will be my next repair.

Had our first real cold come thru kansas, and I found out that my heater doesn't blow hot air! I'm going to attempt to flush it out, if you have any pointers feel free to let me know! Also, my hot and cold lever doesn't go fully to either side, would that have anything to do with it?

I also got my cat back exhaust in, I'll be slapping some paint on it and installing in the next couple of days, pics to come

 

Not sure how I missed this build but that is a nice looking runner you got. What part of Kansas you from? I think you sent some of the cold over in my area. Welcome to Yotatech.

Is the valve on the firewall moving as far as it should for your heater? Plenty of air flowing? https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f116...trucks-286766/

I would try and flush the heater core with a water hose at the firewall and maybe try letting a little CLR into the core to clean it out. If the controls are not moving all the way, that can cause it not to get as hot. You really don't want to have to change a heater core. It is a big job. With the link above it will show how to check your adjustments.

Took the runner camping a couple weeks back, the roll bar serves as an excellent mounting point for all you fellow hammockers out there

Well the 4runner left me stranded for the first time this weekend, my alternator completly went out so I replaced that this weekend! Real easy swap. Also fixed my heater issue as well! I also acquired one of these for Christmas and will be figuring out a way to incorporate it soon!

 

that air pump... leave it in the back and use it when you need it. I have the same one. I've ended up taking it from truck to truck and using it for buddy's rigs too.

 

Hey yotatech got a quick question was wondering if you guys had any input on.. just noticed this leak on the back of my transfer case and wanted to make sure the seal I was going to order is what is causing this.. I believe it to be the transfer case output shaft seal but the fsm isn't real clear on it

 

Yep, easy to change. Pull the flange, replace the seal, bolt the flange back up. It's not like the pinion flange which needs the proper bearing preload. Use RTV on the splines and the face of the nut and washer to keep oil from creeping through.

Hey guys! Figured id update. Got the opportunity to replace a failed clutch slave cylinder in a parking lot this last weekend! And also i took the top off for the first time today! First time its been off in over 20 years!

 

Don't forget to use some type of cleaner to remove any fluid residue before applying the RTV. Use an OEM seal or the Marlin Crawler eco seal. Depending on the condition of the nut, you might need to purchase a replacement. I purchased one from Toyota when i purchased their seal just because they were so inexpensive.

 

Whatsup yotatech! I havnt had a chance to work on the 4runner lately, been busy buying my first house and finally have A GARAGE!

Been trying to come up with a plan of attack for the 4runner. I want to go thru and re do the suspension in the rear, im probably going to end up with the OME kit to replace all the worn out components. I also need to address the front end, and after much debate ive decided to just rebuild the IFS. I dont do much wheeling with this thing and its my daily driver when the weather is bad.
So plans for the future include-
Leaf springs
Leaf bushings
New shocks
Grind and POR the frame and anything I can get to
Replace fluid and seals in rear diff
New U joints
Ball joints
Tie rods
CVs if I need them
Also going to pull all the carpet and power wash it
Get around to replacing that seal on the xfer case..
Fix broken emergency brake cable..
Time to start buying parts!
