Hello everyone, I have a 91 toyota pickup 4x4 manual, and it has a 3.4l conversion with an 89661-3d360 ecm in it.. it is believed to be bad as the truck doesn't hardly want to start, and it dies fast if you give it gas.. my question is, where can I find one at?? I have looked all over the place.. I don't know how to fix this problem as to where to find one.. someone please help me!! I am desperate at this point.. been down 6 months now.. all suggestions are welcome...thanks team!!!
Hello and welcome to the forum. You have a unicorn of an ecu right there and you probably won’t find one if the truck is still running I would look into other problems, I would check codes first which should be really easily if the truck got wired right via an obd2 port if it doesn’t have one I would definitely install one and check all of the other wiring they’ve done to it
Thank you so much for responding, I really appreciate it.. but c that's the thing, one minute it has no codes, then it'll have 5 codes, and then one code... I have rebuilt this truck and have had 3 mechanics look at it and they can't figure it out. The truck had ran perfect, then one day on my way home it started sputtering, the more gas I have it the more it would die until it shut off completely. I have changed fuel pump, fuel filter, fuses, I had taken off the fuel line right before v injectors and it had fuel... like everything seems to work, but when it would turn over, if you have b it throttle it would die, however if you slowly give it gas, the motor would run somewhat but would die fast... so they are ultimately telling me it is the computer... idk, I have tried everything. Replaced all sensors and everything.. I just don't know anymore.
What are the 5 codes if you have been able to scan them? I’ve seen a lot of strange things happen over the years it could be a loose wire that doesn’t connect all the time and when it doesn’t connect the codes reset, I would definitely go through and check all the wiring before just sticking an ecm in because if the ecm is bad there is probably a reason for it going bad.
Another thing you could possibly consider doing is using an automatic ecm which would require repining the wiring and if you’re concerned about check engine light being on it would require another bit of creative fooling of the automatic ecm but automatic ecms seem to still be plentiful still.
To be honest I really don't remember all the does, because it's been like 6 months since it's happened, and the truck is like an hour away from me now at a mechanic shop.. but it started with just the mass air flow sensor code, so I was like ok, I bought a new maf sensor for like $60 and it didn't work, and then I bought a $300 maf sensor and it didn't work either.. so I was like dang what's wrong? Also I have the maf conversion from like a 2000 camry or something I believe, where you redo the pins on the maf sensor harness. Ran with it like that for a year and a half and never had an issue, so I wouldn't think it was that, but I even checked the continuity of the wires from the harness by the maf sensor all the way back to the ecm and everything was perfect. So after that is when some of the other codes came up, then the one mechanic thought he figured it out, he clamped off the return fuel line and was able to get it started and it ran good until he shut it off, he thought it was the fuel pressure regulator..and the next day went out to move the truck after presuming that he fixed it, did the same process of clamping it off, and then it wouldn't start again.. it's so confusing though. And with the automatic ecm, would it still function right even though my truck is manual? Thanks for your help!
The automatic ecm will work if you repin the harness but you’ll end up with a shift solenoid E code which doesn’t really effect anything other then the check engine light will be on. There is a thread where a guy was able to fool the ecm and got rid of the check engine light. I will see if I can link it to you
Thank you so much for the link... now is there a specific novel of automatic ecm I need? Like how mine I 89661-3d360.. what might be a good code for an auto one? Or does it matter so much?
Brother, I can't thank you enough for all your help seriously for taking the time out to do it has been a blessing!! You're the best man! Thanks again!
