I see now that looks pretty chewed how does cylnder walls look? Could it be from a broke ring? Isnt that where the pistion almost makes contact with head or is it more like corrosion at the gasket contact area?

The walls look pretty good. Weird thing is the head gasket doesn't seem to have sustained damage to that particular area...I'm wondering if a machine shop will just shake their heads and send me on my way?

Blowing white smoke from the exhaust with bits of what appeared to be gasket.

You might be able to find someone that could fill in the chewed up section and resurface but you might end up paying out after all said and done as much as a reconditioned one would be. You should really take a look at that piston and walls something had to cause that . But then again maybe just file it down slap on a new hg and see how it goes. And hopefully whatever that was blew out the tailpipe. Check the guides under the valves couldhave cracked off. Or even if something foreign was in there.
