Thanks Terry, it was the wife's 04 4runner with the brake problems. Brakes would have been a good bit cheaper on the 94.

The wife and my son have both driven it now, and they say it feels fine to them. I drove it again last night and I am just not happy with it. It just does not feel right to me. I did notice that I can give it one little pump and then it feels normal. So maybe there is just one little air bubble in there hiding. I am not getting any air out the system any more, but Ill give it one more good bleeding tonight and see what happens.

I picked up the chitons manual on it, mainly to start studying. After we get into the house, Im going to have to do the timing belt. It is past due. From reading the Chiltons it says if any air has gotten into the MC it will have to go to the dealer to be bleed using a scan tool. So maybe that is the problem.

Drew, I did pinch the rubber lines, to stop the fluid while changing the calipers. Which I hate to do that, but I took the short cut this time. But I have watched all the lines while my son was pumping the brakes and I did not see them swelling. I'll give another look tonight though.

Thanks guys

Does the 04 have a load sensing valve?
Some people say you have to bleed that one first off all..

On my own 85, after repairing brakes I've had long travel, but after a week of driving and a second bleeding then it got normal travel..
Did a second bleeding on a mazda 323 for a friend, after that he got exited because there was almost no travel and good brakes

I don't think it has a LSVP. I have seen one, and he book does not list it. The 04 has a integrated MC. The MC also supplies fluid to the shocks. I think he load sensing is all done in the MC.

A little research on the net says that if any air at all has gotten into the ABS system, or the MC, it has to vacuum bleed while using a scan tool. I will call the dealer and see how much they charge.

I called the dealer, and they confirmed that it needs the scan tool, and vacuum bleeder to bleed the abs, and MC. they said 3/4 of an hour labor. I have an appointment Sat at 11:00. Ill let you know if it changes anything.

Yeah, they put it on the scan tool and vacuum bleeder for 45 min. Pedal travel, is back to normal, and the pedal is nice and firm. They charged me $69.00. I didnt feel that was to bad.

One of the guys at church gave me a set of aluminum rims from a 98 4runner, when I went to pick them up they were wrapped in a set of 265 70 R16 Michalins that had about 1/2 the tread left.

My son has only been getting about 12-14 mpg out of his 94. Right now he is running Detroit true tracs with 488's front and rear, 3" body lift, 33x12.50 wrangler dura tracs.

With fuel prices heading up, we are on a mission to get his up to we're mine is at, 18 mpg'ish. We put the tires and rims on his today. You could tell they roll down the road much easier. I dropped his AFM back two teeth, and tomorrow I am going to pull the rear third and put in a open 410 I have. I'm going to pull the front drive shaft so that nobody tries to use the 4WD. If all that helps, I'm going to advance his cam gear just a little and see if it doesn't gain just a little more.

I figure when we head to the mountains we can just spend an afternoon and put his 488 rear third back in, and through his dura tracs back on.

His truck does look really good with the newer aluminum 4runner on it. I'll post some pics tomorrow.

Thanks Chef, I put the open 410 in it tonight. It rolls real nice on the 265 70 R16's. And the rpms went fron 2900 at 55mph to 2400 at 55mph. Not bad, I took it up and filled it up and zero'ed the trip odo. Well see what we get. If we get a good improvement, next step will be to play with the cam timing.

Thanks guys.

I figure if we have good luck with the 410 in the rear, I'll pick up a set off 410s for the front, pull the true tracs out of the 488s, and get him set back up again.

My old runners fuel pump died on me again today. I got it going again, but brought it home and parked it. I ordered the fuel pump that Terry linked to earlier. Not a bad price $26.00 and free shipping, hopefully it comes in pretty quick. But that is a lot better than $130.00 from the local parts store.

Good to hear the brakes are working. Not a bad price for Toyota doing the work and well worth the piece of mind.

About the best I can get out of my 4 wheel drives is 20 and that is on the high side. Normally 18 mpg. I have never messed with the AFM teeth will be intrested in seeing about getting more mileage out of my 2 wheel. Keep us posted on your results. They are talking $5 a gallon by May and I drive nearly 400 miles a week. I feel the pain at the pump.

I have been trying to get my 2 wheels mileage up, I am at 300 to a tank right now. The 4 wheels wont get that kind of mileage. I do good to get 225 miles to a tank on a 4 wheel.

I got a text from a guy I help on his 87 exteneded cab pickup and tried to forward it to here to post it. I dont have the ability to do that but he was truly happy with the cost difference of the fuel pumps. I have used 4 of these on some of my other trucks or fixing someone elses and never any problems.

I was concerned the first time I got one, but not now. Think you will be happy with the results. He got his for $26 and free shipping. He said if you call and order by phone it saves five dollars. I just learned that other day.

Yeah, thanks for the info on the fuel pump. It was $25 and free shipping on ebay. That is about $110 saving over getting it local. I just hope it comes pretty quick. The old runner is sitting right now. My son and I are sharing his ride. But that is ok, as his school is right on my way to work.

I have good luck tunning the fuel systems on these little 22re's by playing with the AFM. There is a good write up on 4x4wire. But you really do need the cheap AF guage. You can do it reading the plugs, listening for pings/backfire, and seat of the pants. But much easier if you instal a $25 AF guage.

I really don't understand why his was getting so much worse mpg's than mine. Both were set up pretty much the same, except he was running 33's, and I was running 35's. My rpms were a little lower because of my 35's, but not that much. Maybe the wind just effects the truck bodies more than the 4runners.

I really like the way the 410's move the truck. If fuel milage really improves I am thinking that I will pull the true tracs out of his 488's, and instal with some 410's

I'll keep you posted.

Hi there TinMan. Just read thru all 17 pages of your build, took a couple days. All I can say is wow, you went above and beyond on that one. As others have said, your attention to detail is amazing. I may not follow with your detail but I definitely have this tread to look to for inspiration. I would like to c some poser pics in front of the new house. Maybe you could put the kids and wife's in there with it. Lol. Congrats with the house and thank u for your service to help keep us free. Would also like to see how u set up the new digs. The man cave I mean. Later

I think Tinman and Slacker are my favorite 2 builds on restores here. The work they put into them is incrdedible.

Hey all I haven't forgot about you. Just been pretty busy with work, the new house and move. We did close on the house, been over there every day getting it ready. The movers are here now. Also been traveling a bit for work. I have the new garage set up.

I have already cleaned it up and reorganized once, I am sure it will go through a couple more before I am completely happy with it. But have already used it to change all the oil in the family trucksters, and will will be doing the timing belt in the wife's 04 runner soon.

The old 4runner has done pretty well. I just did the first 3000 mile oil change on it. There are some things I need to do to it now that it is getting broke in. It's ready for bump stops, I used th original trans mount and it needs to be replaced. The cheap leaf spring bushings that TG supplies with their kits are already wearing out and I need to replace them. After that I need to on the weather stripping and interior.

Posset shot

Two wheel drive it climbed up over that little mound, but they didnt get a pick of it on top.

I'll get caught up on your build threads soon.
