Have not done a build-up thread before and I wanted to keep a progression log of my 4runner that I can look back on and use as reference for future rigs. Here are a couple pics to kick it off.

Rear brakes were really dirty


Drivers side was caked with diff oil, I must investigate.




This was the culprit , a broken rear bearing. I knew I was going to have the fix that rear noise sooner or later.

 

Got my brakes on, old drums are a PITA. Too many springs.


After replacing the pads I had to replace my broken bearing, that was a lot easier to get off then the Koyo one I got used at the Pick N Pull. Putting it back on after rebuilding it was a cinch. Of course my brake cylinder had to go out after I got it all back together and bled the brakes. Once that was fixed I had no leaks and could move on to cleaning my wheels and painting them.

 

Prepping the wheels before paint was not fun, lots of caked on grease and dirt made for not so balanced tires. They were looking so shiny when I was done I almost didn't want to paint them but I'm not a fan of chrome so had to be done.


I liked the color combo I had on my previous 4Runner that I did the exact same thing to my 85. Plus I like these rims better. The cold weather was dragging the process but was able to get it finished in time for lunch. Need to start working on the interior.

 

So here are a few shots of the interior, some parts missing and it's a bit ragged but I will change that. Kinda wish I held onto my roller 86 SR5 because I could have used the interior from that and called it good. And I would have had a Tach to boot.

for some reason someone thought it was a good idea to cut the under dash so the stereo would open up all the way
I had to splice all the original plugs back on and replace the stereo trim piece but unfortunately the ash tray was broke so that's on my list of needed items.



Also got a new horn cover for the steering wheel


not the original seats and considering the condition of everything else I guess that's a good thing. Plus these seats are pretty comfy, I think I may paint them black though.


I want to redo the panels and headliner with some nice threads but another time, plus I want to add a manual sun roof.



The hole in the headliner was made for wiring the CB I imagine. I didn't like that it was located right in the middle of the sun roof so I took it down along with the wink mirror. I replaced the mirror with an original one. Also added a new dome light.

Not a big fan of giant tube bumpers so when I get the time I will build my own. This bumper like the front was welded to the brackets to fit, and poorly done too. I like my lines to be neat with a proper fit.

 

Decided to update the heater control valve to the plastic one because mine was looking a little crusty and didn't want to break my cable.

wish i could get one, but people hold onto them for far too long nowadays... and the ones that are being sold are immediately getting modded...

 

what are your plans for it

 

For now I just plan on getting it better than stock, off-road capable and a good camping rig. Once I get me a 79 Fj40 then I will get a little crazy with it but for now it is my D.D.

 

Received my Denso plug wires and O2 sensor this week, also installed a wix fuel filter. Now I'm just waiting for my OME suspension to arrive.

 

Awe, I was hoping this was an old thread when I found it and that I'd get to see the whole thing done... Keep on posting pics! I just picked up almost the same truck and am about to paint what I think are the exact same wheelsnow that I have almost all of the little things (very similar issues to yours) taken care of. Looks good so far.

 

Somehow I missed you having a build thread. I missed out on getting an 85, but I still like them all. Looking forward to your build.

I hear you on the stereo thing. I just now got all of the old stereo wires out. Its not that much more to get the proper adapters to make the connections. It doesnt take much more effort to do it right, but some will rig it up.

 

Oh no, I haven't had a build thread of my own - I'm out searching other people's build threads and hoping they're done and can show me everything I need to know I've had a bunch of projects, but this is my first Toyota. Lovin it and have a lot of the same "issues" as yours. Keep the thread going! I can share mine if anybody's interested.

 

Can't help but subscribe to another first gen build thread. I like to watch and dream while other people have the money to make the rides like awesome..

 

Finally got my OME shocks and stabiliser , also have my bushings and front springs but waiting for rear set from OME.

 

Got my spings from OME and installed them last Friday, what a difference. The ride is amazing and raised my truck a lot compared to what it was, maybe 5" or so compared to the sagging originals.

After lots and lots of trips to the junkyard I finally found me an '82 Supra AFM , I wasn't even there looking for it and it caught my eye. Can it be?.....'82 Supra √..... lets pop the hood and see....5MGE √.....22250-43110 SCORE! Very Clean AFM, almost looks new. Next time I need something from the junkyard I'm not going to look for it and just maybe I will find it. Will go back tomorrow for some 3" plumbing and stuff.

 

Where did you buy the plastic one? Mine is really stiff and my heater isn't very hot. Might be a clogged hose but I'm guessing this plastic part is cheap and couldn't hurt. Thoughts?

 

I got mine from a 3rd gen pickup. I believe the 2nd gen 4runners have those as well.
